ed-fi-api-client

ed-fi-api-client is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Ed-Fi-Exchange-OSS/Ed-Fi-SDK-for-AI-Assistants. It costs 193 tokens per session (2,353 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A coding guide for building clients for Ed-Fi APIs, which exchange K–12 education data such as students, attendance, and grades. It covers authentication, discovering API endpoints, sending and retrieving records, and handling errors.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when writing, reviewing, debugging, or fixing Ed-Fi integrations such as scripts, command-line tools, software libraries, data imports, or school-system connections.
Why use it?
Ed-Fi has rules that differ from common REST APIs, so following this guidance helps avoid incorrect requests, references, and update behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00193 $0.02353
Opus 5.5 $0.00077 $0.00941
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00039 $0.00471
Haiku 4.5 $0.00019 $0.00235

Security

Grade A, and why

ed-fi-api-client scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Ed-Fi API Client

Ed-Fi APIs exchange K-12 education data using resources defined by the Ed-Fi Data Standard. The client guidance here applies to ODS/API 7.x and Ed-Fi API 8: both expose the same resources and behave the same way for POST/PUT/DELETE, references, descriptors and errors. Ed-Fi API 8 is a new platform, though, and has a few breaking changes for clients; see Ed-Fi API 8 differences. In this skill, Ed-Fi API 8 means 8.1 and later; 8.0 is not a target. Examples use ODS/API 7.3 URLs and Data Standard 5.2.

Do not guess at Ed-Fi behavior from general REST conventions. Several Ed-Fi rules surprise developers: POST is an upsert, URLs use a server-generated id rather than natural keys, and a missing reference returns 409 Conflict, not 400 or 404.

Step 1: Start every integration from the Discovery API

The API root URL (e.g. https://api.example.org/v7.3/api) is the only URL a client should be configured with. A GET on it returns the version and the URLs for everything else:

{
  "version": "7.3",
  "dataModels": [{ "name": "Ed-Fi", "version": "5.2.0" }],
  "urls": {
    "dependencies": "https://api.example.org/v7.3/api/metadata/data/v3/dependencies",
    "openApiMetadata": "https://api.example.org/v7.3/api/metadata/",
    "oauth": "https://api.example.org/v7.3/api/oauth/token",
    "dataManagementApi": "https://api.example.org/v7.3/api/data/v3/",
    "changeQueries": "https://api.example.org/v7.3/api/changeQueries/v1/"
  }
}
  • Read urls.oauth and urls.dataManagementApi from this response instead of hard-coding them.
  • Resource paths such as /ed-fi/students are relative to dataManagementApi. Make sure it ends in / before joining paths to it: ODS/API 7.x returns .../data/v3/, but Ed-Fi API 8 returns .../data with no trailing slash, and URL resolvers (new URL(path, base), urljoin) then drop the data segment. In this skill, {dataManagementApi} means that URL with the trailing /.
  • Check dataModels to confirm the Data Standard version before relying on a resource's shape.
  • Rule: DISC-1.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
