neqsim-erd-reach-screening

neqsim-erd-reach-screening is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from equinor/neqsim-community-skills. It costs 113 tokens per session (1,328 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

An engineering screening method for estimating whether a platform or fixed drilling rig can reach a distant underground target. It models the planned well path, drill-string friction, and torque limits, using a rig's longest previous well for calibration.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to estimate torque-limited reach, compare friction cases, and assess whether a heavier or higher-torque drill string could extend reach. It accepts target depth and horizontal departure along with well, mud, casing, and drill-string details.
Why use it?
It replaces a rough reach guess with a screening estimate that shows how friction and drill-string choice affect the limit. It helps teams judge whether a proposed long-reach well is plausible before detailed design.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00113 $0.01328
Opus 5.5 $0.00045 $0.00531
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00266
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00133

Security

Grade A, and why

neqsim-erd-reach-screening scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 21d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 3 executable files (src/erd_reach_screening/__init__.py, src/erd_reach_screening/model.py, tests/test_erd_reach_model.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

ERD Reach Screening

Use this skill for a public, screening-level answer to "can this rig reach that far?". It builds a build-and-hold well path, integrates a soft-string torque and drag model with Coulomb friction, and returns the torque-limited reach for a drill string and friction case. It is meant to be calibrated to the longest well already drilled from the same rig before any reach number is quoted.

When to Use

  • A keeper, exploration or infill well is proposed from an existing platform or fixed rig and the horizontal departure is large compared with the rig's history.
  • A reach-versus-friction-factor curve is needed to turn friction uncertainty into a probability that the well can be drilled.
  • A team wants to know whether a heavier or higher-torque drill string (for example 6-5/8 in) moves the reach limit enough to matter.

Inputs

  • tvd, departure in metres below the rig floor and horizontally from the slot.
  • WellEnvironment: kick-off point, build rate (deg per 30 m), mud specific gravity, cased and open-hole friction factors, casing shoe fraction.
  • DrillString: drill pipe, HWDP and BHA weights per metre, tool-joint radius, torque limit.

Outputs

  • ReachResult: measured depth, hold inclination, ERD ratio (departure over TVD), pick-up and slack-off hook load, torque on bottom, which limit binds (torque or slack-off (lock-up)).
  • reach_limit(...): the largest departure that keeps torque within the limit and slack-off positive.

Engineering Method

  1. Build-and-hold path from the kick-off point at a constant build rate; the hold inclination follows from the target departure.
  2. Johancsik soft-string integration from the bit up: axial load changes by the buoyed weight component plus or minus friction times the contact force; torque accumulates friction times contact force times tool-joint radius.
  3. Calibrate the friction factors so the model just allows the rig's longest historic well (for Njord A on the Norwegian shelf this gave 0.15 cased and 0.20 open hole, a limit about 20 percent above the 5.1 km actually drilled), then scale friction to express uncertainty.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

neqsim-erd-reach-screening is a skill published in the GitHub repository equinor/neqsim-community-skills (4 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 113 tokens to every session and 1,328 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-11.
