Connecting with People
The Golden Rule says "treat others as you'd want to be treated." The Platinum Rule says "treat others as they want to be treated." The difference is enormous.
A founder added his own sales force to a joint venture, reasoning that if a partner did the same for him, he would be delighted. His partner was furious -- interpreting the move as interference, distrust, and territorial encroachment. The Golden Rule had produced the exact opposite of its intended effect because it substituted the founder's preferences for his partner's. The Platinum Rule requires a harder discipline: suspending your own frame of reference and inhabiting someone else's. It demands the listening, reading, and understanding skills covered in this category's sibling frameworks -- and then goes one step further, translating comprehension into behaviour calibrated to the other person's actual needs.
Connection is not a feeling. It is a practice -- a series of specific, learnable behaviours that, applied consistently and sincerely, produce the trust upon which every entrepreneurial relationship depends.
The Framework
Connecting with people operates through five techniques, arranged from the most immediately applicable to the most structurally transformative.
Technique 1: Validate, Validate, Validate
Validation is mirroring's advanced form. Where mirroring repeats the speaker's words, validation names the speaker's emotions -- and demonstrates that those emotions are reasonable, even if the validator does not share them.
The distinction:
- Mirroring: "I hear you saying your bill was $250 more than expected."
- Validation: "You've been on hold for an hour and your bill is $250 wrong. You must be furious."
Validation accomplishes something that no other technique in this category replicates: it disarms negative emotion before the substantive problem is addressed. A customer-service representative who validates an angry caller's frustration before attempting a fix will resolve the issue faster, with higher satisfaction, than one who jumps to solutions. The caller's cognitive bandwidth, previously consumed by anger, is freed for collaboration the moment she feels understood.
