Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Turn the pyramid upside down. The most reproduced diagram in management education -- Abraham Maslow's five-level hierarchy, with physiological needs at the base and self-actualization at the apex -- has been drawn right-side-up so many times that people have stopped questioning it. Yet the most consequential insight for entrepreneurs sits at the top, not the bottom. Maslow's genius was not in observing that hungry people think about food. It was in arguing that once basic needs are met, human motivation does not plateau -- it transforms. The person whose survival is secure does not stop wanting; they start wanting differently. They want meaning, growth, purpose, and the realization of their potential. Companies that understand this build products people love and organizations people refuse to leave. Companies that do not understand this wonder why competitive salaries produce mediocre commitment and feature-rich products generate indifference.
Maslow published "A Theory of Human Motivation" in 1943. Eight decades later, the hierarchy remains one of the most cited and most debated frameworks in psychology and management. Its critics are numerous and not always wrong. But the core architecture -- that human needs exist in layers, that lower layers must be substantially satisfied before higher layers become primary motivators -- continues to explain behavior that purely rational models cannot.
The Framework
Maslow's hierarchy arranges human needs into five levels. The foundational claim is that needs at lower levels must be reasonably satisfied before needs at higher levels become dominant motivational forces. The framework is not a rigid staircase -- people can be motivated by multiple levels simultaneously -- but the general directional pull holds across cultures and contexts.
