The Dichotomy of Control
All of Stoic philosophy can be summarised in a single sentence, and that sentence is the first lesson every entrepreneur needs. Epictetus opens the Enchiridion with it: "Some things are in our control, while others are not." That's it. The entire philosophical tradition -- twenty-three centuries of it -- rests on the ability to draw one clean line between what you can change and what you cannot. Most founders spend the better part of their careers hurling themselves at the wrong side of that line, expending energy on market conditions they cannot alter, competitors they cannot silence, and investor sentiment they cannot manufacture. The dichotomy of control is not merely a Stoic concept. It is the operating system upon which every other Stoic concept runs.
The Framework
The Line That Governs Everything
Epictetus divides the universe into two domains with surgical precision:

The key insight is not merely intellectual but operational. Marcus Aurelius condensed the framework into three imperatives that function as a daily protocol: Control your perceptions. Direct your actions properly. Willingly accept what is outside your control. That trio -- perception, action, will -- structures the entirety of Stoic practice.
