Stoic Fortitude and Resilience
IRON. The word recurs across Stoic literature with a frequency that borders on obsession, and the reason is not metaphorical vanity. Iron is shaped in fire, hardened by hammering, made useful through processes that would destroy lesser materials. Comfort, as Seneca observed with characteristic bluntness, has never hardened anything. Cato the Younger walked Rome barefoot and bareheaded in rain and heat -- not because he lacked the means for sandals and a parasol, but because he was training his soul against the day when fortune would strip him of everything except his character. That day came, as it always does. Cato was ready. The question for the entrepreneur is not whether adversity will arrive. It is whether the founder will meet it as raw ore or as tempered steel.

The Framework
Stoic fortitude is not the grim endurance of someone who merely survives. It is a trained capacity to metabolise difficulty into strength -- what Nassim Taleb would later call anti-fragility, but which the Stoics articulated two millennia earlier without the neologism. The framework rests on four pillars.
Pillar 1: The Inner Citadel
Marcus Aurelius returned again and again to the concept of an impenetrable inner fortress -- a domain of reasoned choice that no external force can breach. "The mind freed from passions is an impenetrable fortress -- a person has no more secure place of refuge for all time." The fortress falls only through internal betrayal: when fear, greed, or despair open the gates from within.
For entrepreneurs, the Inner Citadel is the capacity to separate external events (a lost client, a failed fundraise, a competitor's surprise move) from internal judgement. The event is neutral. The interpretation -- catastrophe or curriculum -- is a choice.
