python-typing

python-typing is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from fgmacedo/agent-skills. It costs 104 tokens per session (2,380 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Python type-checking workflow using mypy, pyright, basedpyright and ty. These tools inspect code without running it and report where values may have the wrong type.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for adding type annotations, fixing checker errors, typing dynamic Python features such as decorators and overloads, and checking whether suppressions are really needed.
Why use it?
It helps catch unclear or incorrect types before they become runtime bugs, while checking that several type checkers agree. It also reduces unfinished fixes hidden by broad or missing types.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00104 $0.02380
Opus 5.5 $0.00042 $0.00952
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00476
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00238

Security

Grade A, and why

python-typing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Python typing: mypy, pyright, ty

A typing fix is done when every target checker sees the precise type at the call sites users write, proven with assert_type probes. "The errors are gone" is not done: mypy and ty silently turn unfinished fixes into Any / Unknown.

Do not report done until all four hold:

  1. Every public function and method you edited that callers reach through the requested API has a precise return annotation (unannotated is Any in mypy, Unknown in ty; only pyright infers). Leave private helpers and closures alone; Any added to satisfy coverage is not a fix.
  2. A probe asserts the result type of each API the request names, plus one line that must error, and is clean under every target checker.
  3. Each suppression you added was reported as needed by a checker, and none is unused.
  4. The project's own checker invocations and tests pass.

Verified with mypy 2.4.0, pyright 1.1.414, basedpyright 1.40.2, ty 0.0.86, Python 3.14.

Workflow

1. Detect and baseline

Use the checkers, config and exact commands that pre-commit and CI run, with the project's venv (mypy --python-executable .venv/bin/python, pyright --pythonpath .venv/bin/python, ty check --python .venv). Record error counts by rule before editing.

  • pyrightconfig.json replaces [tool.pyright]; ty.toml replaces [tool.ty]; an unknown [tool.ty] key makes ty exit 2.
  • mypy and pyright target python_version / pythonVersion, else the interpreter; ty targets the lower bound of requires-python.

2. Fix with the first rung that works

  1. The code or the annotation. Real bugs get fixed; config errors get fixed in config.
  2. A precise construct: @overload, Protocol, TypeVar / ParamSpec, Self, TypeIs, generic defaults, descriptor __get__ overloads (recipes: references/patterns.md).
  3. Declarations under if TYPE_CHECKING: for members created at runtime. Runtime unchanged.
  4. A .pyi stub next to the module, or a stub package for a third-party gap.
  5. One cast inside one helper, never at call sites.
  6. A narrow, coded suppression on the exact line (see Suppressions).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

python-typing is a skill published in the GitHub repository fgmacedo/agent-skills (10 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 104 tokens to every session and 2,380 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-14.
