firecrawl-research-index

firecrawl-research-index is a skill for Claude Code from firecrawl/firecrawl-claude-plugin. It costs 40 tokens per session (361 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A way to find academic papers that answer a research question in Firecrawl's research index. The index contains paper abstracts, mainly from biomedical and life-science sources such as PubMed, bioRxiv, and medRxiv, plus preprints from arXiv in computer science, physics, and mathematics.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to search the indexed paper abstracts for research evidence, especially in the listed scientific fields.
Why use it?
It narrows a broad research question to relevant papers and can expand the search using both meaning and document structure.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00361
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00144
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00072
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

firecrawl-research-index scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Paper research

Use Firecrawl's paper-index MCP tools for scientific literature, including biomedical and arXiv papers. If a tool is deferred, discover it with the host's tool search. Ordinary firecrawl_search with the research category filters web sources; it does not query the same paper index.

  • firecrawl_research_search_papers finds papers from a natural-language query. Add author, category, or date filters when the request requires them.
  • firecrawl_research_inspect_paper retrieves canonical metadata for a known paperId. Reuse identifiers returned by search or supplied by the user.
  • firecrawl_research_related_papers expands from seed_ids using the requested relationship: similar work, citing papers, or references. Its intent states what the related work should address.
  • firecrawl_research_read_paper retrieves full-text passages relevant to a question about one paperId.

Choose the operations needed for the question; a known paper does not require another discovery search. Verify substantive claims with relevant passages when available. If full text is unavailable, label conclusions based on the abstract or metadata and use firecrawl_scrape on an accessible source URL when helpful.

Cite paper URLs or persistent identifiers. Distinguish a paper's claims from your synthesis and do not describe a partial search as an exhaustive review. Respect the user's source and tool choices. Report connection or authentication errors.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

firecrawl-research-index is a skill published in the GitHub repository firecrawl/firecrawl-claude-plugin (247 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 361 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
