writer-research

writer-research is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Firstp1ck/pi-coding-agent-forge. It costs 32 tokens per session (370 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research guide for checking factual details used in fiction, such as historical settings, occupations, travel, and material culture, while separating evidence from invented worldbuilding.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate a bounded factual question, record suitable sources and dates, and explain how the findings affect a scene without adding irrelevant background.
Why use it?
It reduces plausibility errors and makes uncertainty, conflicting evidence, and deliberate departures from reality clear to the author.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.00370
Opus 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00148
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00074
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00037

Security

Grade A, and why

writer-research scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Research for fiction

When to use

Use when factual uncertainty affects a scene's plausibility or the author requests references for a setting or occupation.

Inputs and assumptions

Identify the bounded factual question, period, location, required accuracy, and whether the work is historical, contemporary, or deliberately alternate-world fiction.

Portable workflow

  1. Separate the factual question from the manuscript's private plot and character details.
  2. Check existing author-provided references before searching again.
  3. If suitable research tools are available and authorized, search with a minimal factual query. Prefer primary or specialist sources for consequential details.
  4. Record sources, dates when relevant, conflicting evidence, and uncertainty.
  5. Explain the practical consequence for the scene without dumping unrelated background into the prose.
  6. Mark departures from real-world facts as deliberate inventions only after author approval.
  7. Save concise research notes only when requested, using the project workflow.

Safety and side effects

Never upload manuscript passages or private notes to search services without explicit authorization. Do not fabricate citations. If research tools are unavailable, label tentative knowledge and propose what needs checking.

Scripts, references, and dependencies

No bundled browser, scraper, or API credentials. External research depends on the host's available tools and author approval.

Verification

Check that factual claims have appropriate evidence, uncertain details remain labeled, and fictional changes are not presented as real history.

Pi adapter

Use /writer research --brief "Check how a nineteenth-century lighthouse keeper would receive supplies". The package does not install a search extension or contact external services itself.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

writer-research is a skill published in the GitHub repository Firstp1ck/pi-coding-agent-forge (91 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 32 tokens to every session and 370 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-19.
