figure.create_tikz

figure.create_tikz is a skill for Claude Code from gpsaggese/helpers. It costs 11 tokens per session (890 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A tool workflow for turning an image or text description into TikZ code, which is LaTeX code for diagrams and figures. It also creates a compilable LaTeX file and renders the result as a PNG for refinement.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create flowcharts, structural diagrams, plots, and other illustrations, or recreate a sketch as TikZ code.
Why use it?
It makes diagrams reproducible and suitable for LaTeX documents instead of requiring them to be drawn manually.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: installed under .claude/. Also seen: model in frontmatter; reads .claude/ paths.

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is > ./helpers_root/dev_scripts_helpers/dockerize/dockerized_tikz_to_bitmap.py \.

Good fit Use it to create flowcharts, structural diagrams, plots, and other illustrations, or recreate a sketch as TikZ code.

It runs from inside its repository, so the clone comes first — what it calls does not travel with the file alone.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00011 $0.00890
Opus 5.5 $0.00004 $0.00356
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00002 $0.00178
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00089

Security

Grade A, and why

figure.create_tikz scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 117 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Goal

  • Convert images or text descriptions into publication-quality TikZ LaTeX code
  • Generate a compilable LaTeX file, render it to PNG, and refine the output until it matches the input

When to Use

  • Use this skill to:
    • Create publication-quality diagrams, plots, or visualizations
    • Convert hand-drawn sketches or images into reproducible TikZ code
    • Generate diagrams for LaTeX documents

When NOT to Use

  • Do not use this skill for:
    • Complex photographs needing photorealistic rendering
    • Plots from large datasets (use dedicated plotting libraries)
    • Advanced 3D visualizations

Workflow

Receive and Understand the Input

  • You receive either:
    1. An image of a diagram
    2. A text description of a concept or situation

Choose Figure Type

  • Pick the diagram structure that fits the input:
    • FLOWCHART: sequential steps, decision branches, pipelines
    • STRUCTURAL: containment (things inside other things), architecture
    • ILLUSTRATIVE: plots, physical cross-sections, or abstract spatial metaphors

Generate TikZ Code

  • Generate valid LaTeX with the TikZ package, as a complete minimal working example:
    \documentclass{standalone}
    \usepackage{tikz}
    \begin{document}
    \begin{tikzpicture}
    ...
    \end{tikzpicture}
    \end{document}

Preserve layout accurately

  • If converting from an image <IMAGE>, reproduce the layout precisely
  • Preserve proportions, relative positions, and symmetry
  • Use coordinates and scaling where appropriate
  • Approximate complex curves with TikZ paths when needed

Follow the TikZ conventions

  • Follow .claude/skills/tikz.rules.md, especially Colors, Typography, Layout, Reusable Patterns, and Polish

Handle ambiguity

  • Make reasonable assumptions about unclear inputs
  • Prioritize clarity and visual correctness over perfection

Save the File

  • Save the LaTeX code to ./tikz_figure.tex in the current directory (not in .claude/). Output only valid TikZ code, with no markdown formatting or explanations
  • Add this comment at the top of the file, saying how it was generated:
    % Generated by `.claude/skills/figure.create_tikz/SKILL.md`

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

figure.create_tikz is a skill published in the GitHub repository gpsaggese/helpers (158 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 11 tokens to every session and 890 once invoked, about $0.0000 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-06.
