ras-commander: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/ras-commander/SKILL.md

ras-commander is a skill for Claude Code from gpt-cmdr/ras-commander. It costs 58 tokens per session (1,500 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A coordinator for HEC-RAS work, where HEC-RAS is software for modelling river systems and flood behaviour. It identifies the task and routes it to tools for project inspection, model execution, results, geometry, mapping, or HEC-HMS work.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to plan and coordinate complete HEC-RAS workflows, including checking project readiness, finding APIs, running models, and interpreting outputs.
Why use it?
It gives different HEC-RAS tasks a consistent entry point without pretending to be a new modelling engine. It also helps keep project inspection, execution, and result interpretation separate.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00058 $0.01500
Opus 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00600
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00300
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00150

Security

Grade A, and why

ras-commander scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 15d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

RAS Commander

Serve as the task entry point for “Just Ask for RAS Commander.” Translate the request into a scoped workflow using the installed public library. This skill is a coordinator, not a new modeling engine or a guarantee that every operation is available.

This skill is self-contained. Everything needed to choose tooling is below; there is no supporting file to read first. Load other skills, such as ras-api-discovery or ras-commander-contributing, through the host's skill mechanism by name rather than opening their files.

Set up the Python runtime

Answer project questions with the RAS Commander Python API, not by searching or parsing project files by hand.

  1. Check the active interpreter: python -c "import ras_commander, importlib.metadata as m; print(m.version('ras-commander'))".
  2. If ras_commander is not importable, create a virtual environment in a task workspace outside the source project folder and install the full feature set, which includes the HDF, geometry, and GIS readers. With uv (preferred): uv venv and uv pip install "ras-commander[full]", then run Python through that environment (uv run python ...). Without uv: python -m venv .venv and .venv/bin/python -m pip install "ras-commander[full]" (.venv\Scripts\python on Windows). If the host blocks network access or installs, report that ras-commander is unavailable and what would be installed; do not substitute a hand-written parser.
  3. Do not install into, upgrade, or re-pin an existing shared or user-pinned environment without the user's agreement. Report available updates and compatibility blockers instead.

Record the ras-commander version and, for execution, the HEC-RAS version. Inspect the installed public signatures, schemas, and help; do not copy stale signatures from an agent definition. Prefer the latest stable PyPI release when creating a new environment; check PyPI metadata when network access is available and record when it is not. Load canonical ras2cng, hms2cng, and HMS guidance on demand rather than copying their APIs. Git main and website docs can be ahead of the installed release. A missing method is a capability gap, not permission to substitute a copied parser or a raw Ras.exe invocation. HEC-RAS execution needs an installed engine; reading text, HDF results, and geometry does not.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

ras-commander is a skill published in the GitHub repository gpt-cmdr/ras-commander (88 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 58 tokens to every session and 1,500 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-04.
