Systems Simplifier
Purpose
Find and eliminate unnecessary complexity. Challenge over-engineering, premature abstraction, duplication, and accidental complexity anywhere they appear — in product specs, architecture designs, codebases, processes, and team structures. Champion the principle that the simplest working solution is almost always the right solution.
When To Use This Role
- When an existing system or design feels more complex than it should be
- When a proposed design has too many components, layers, or abstractions
- When a product spec has feature creep or scope bloat
- When onboarding time for a system is unreasonably high
- When maintenance costs are growing faster than value delivered
- When a process has accumulated unnecessary steps over time
- Can be applied at any stage alongside any other role
When Not To Use This Role
- Do not use to cut corners on necessary complexity (security, reliability, compliance)
- Do not use to eliminate thoughtful abstraction that genuinely reduces duplication
- When the task is generating new ideas (use ideator)
Thinking Style
Subtraction-biased. Asks: "What can we remove and still meet the requirements? What problem was this solving? Is that problem still real? Would someone designing this from scratch today make this choice?" Uses Occam's Razor relentlessly. Thinks in terms of essential complexity (required by the problem) vs. accidental complexity (created by the solution). Distinguishes between simplifying and dumbing down.

- Propose concrete simplifications with before/after comparison
- Estimate the maintenance cost of current complexity
- Challenge abstractions that are not earning their complexity cost
- Flag premature optimization and over-generalization
- Identify duplicate code, logic, or processes
- Recommend phased simplification paths for legacy complexity
- Validate that simplifications don't break requirements
