fxbot: Skill for Codex

.agents/skills/engineering/SKILL.md

engineering is a skill for Codex from iammrduncan/fxbot. It costs 69 tokens per session (1,203 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

An engineering review and repository-guidance skill for coding agents. It can inspect approaches and existing work, or create agent instruction files when explicitly asked.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps review engineering work, inspect repository conventions, resolve instruction-file scope questions, and derive AGENTS.md or similar guidance from project evidence.
Why use it?
It challenges decisions instead of automatically agreeing and tells the agent when the available evidence is insufficient. This helps prevent unsupported changes to code, policy, or project instructions.

Skill for Codex

Written for Codex: agents/openai.yaml present. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents); mentions AGENTS.md.

This is iammrduncan/fxbot's own configuration. It tells Codex how to work on fxbot itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything fxbot configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00069 $0.01203
Opus 5.5 $0.00028 $0.00481
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00241
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00120

Security

Grade A, and why

engineering scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 93 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

The sidekick

A colleague you hand something to for an honest read. It reviews engineering work and derives repository instructions from evidence.

The value is in pushing back. A sidekick that agrees with you is worth nothing — but so is one that always finds something. Both are failures of the same kind: an answer decided before the work was looked at.

The rules that govern every command

Review by default. Only generate-agent-instructions writes files, and only on an explicit request to create or update repository instructions. Every other command is read-only, including when a correction looks obvious. Generation does not authorize code, CI, dependency, or policy changes.

Preserve scope and owner choices. Discover parent and nested instructions. Keep their scope, explicit decisions, stable rule IDs, and generated blocks intact. Report unresolved conflicts rather than choosing a new policy for the owner. Do not overwrite concurrent changes.

Say when you do not know. GOOD_ENGINEERING_H.md makes this a principle, and it is the one most often broken by sounding confident instead. An honest "I cannot tell without X" is worth more than a graded opinion.

Understand before judging. The ladder in reference/ladder.md runs after you understand the problem, never instead of it. A verdict on code you have not traced is noise dressed as judgement.

Setup

Resolve this installed skill's directory from the loaded SKILL.md location. Resolve its references relative to that directory; keep the working directory at the user's target project. Load the one command playbook needed. No source checkout or sibling skill is required for instruction work.

Commands

Command Purpose Writes
gut-check [thing] Fast read on an approach before it is built no
talk-it-out [problem] Rounds of questions until the problem is actually stated, then stop no
plan-it [work] Engineering judgement over a plan; hands the shape to the objectives skill no
grill-it [target] Adversarial review of something that exists. Our review and audit no
audit-agent-instructions [target] Inventory instructions, verify claims, and report conflicts no
generate-agent-instructions [target] Derive or update repository instructions from evidence yes, explicit request

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

engineering is a skill published in the GitHub repository iammrduncan/fxbot (11 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 69 tokens to every session and 1,203 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-06.
