arxiv

arxiv is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from id5463/mcp-server-research. It costs 18 tokens per session (3,158 once invoked), scanned C, a copy of arxiv, MIT.

A search tool for arXiv, a free online repository of research papers, using keywords, authors, categories, or paper IDs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Searching for papers, opening a specific paper by its arXiv ID, reading abstracts, and retrieving full papers as PDFs.
Why use it?
It provides a direct way to find papers and retrieve their titles, authors, abstracts, dates, and PDF links without needing an API key.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Security

Grade C, and why

arxiv scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/search_arxiv.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Using the search_arxiv MCP Tool

The academic-search MCP server provides a search_arxiv tool that wraps the arXiv API:

search_arxiv({ query: "transformer attention", max_results: 10, sort_by: "date" })

It returns structured JSON (title, authors, arxiv_id, abstract, published date, PDF URL). The arxiv-api skill under search-skills/ has the full API reference.

Quick Reference

Action Command
Search papers curl "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=all:QUERY&max_results=5"
Get specific paper curl "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?id_list=2402.03300"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

arxiv is a skill published in the GitHub repository id5463/mcp-server-research (0 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 3,158 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it C with 2 findings (downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). It is 92% identical to arxiv, differing in 44 lines, and is treated as a copy.
