mysql-best-practices

mysql-best-practices is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ismaelrodimb/mcp-mysql-server. It costs 48 tokens per session (780 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidelines for using a MySQL MCP connection to inspect databases and change data. MySQL is a database system that stores information in tables, rows, and columns.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when inspecting schemas, reading or modifying rows, changing tables or columns, or troubleshooting MySQL access and permissions.
Why use it?
They encourage checking the database before editing it, require clear intent for destructive changes, and require verifying writes afterward.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.00780
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00390
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00156
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00078

Security

Grade A, and why

mysql-best-practices scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

MySQL Best Practices

When to Apply

Use this skill when:

  • The user asks to read or modify MySQL data through this plugin MCP.
  • The task touches tables, columns, relations, users, or schema design.
  • The agent is about to run insert_row, update_rows, delete_rows, create_table, drop_table, add_column, or drop_column.
  • The user is troubleshooting connection, permissions, or external-host access.

Core Rules

  1. Prefer inspection before mutation.

    • Before writing rows, inspect the target table with describe_table.
    • Before schema changes, inspect relations with inspect_table_relationships or inspect_database_schema.
  2. Read-first by default.

    • Prefer list_tables, describe_table, select_rows, and resources such as mysql://schema/{database} before changing data.
    • Treat MCP_WRITE_MODE=read-only as the safe default.
  3. Do not perform destructive operations without explicit user intent.

    • delete_rows, drop_table, and drop_column require clear confirmation.
    • When deleting or dropping, first identify what will be affected.
  4. Verify every write.

    • After insert_row, read the inserted row back when possible.
    • After update_rows or delete_rows, confirm affected rows and re-check the table state.
    • After schema changes, re-run describe_table or schema inspection.
  5. Match existing data conventions.

    • Reuse existing column naming and type patterns.
    • For auth or user tables, inspect current password storage before inserting credentials. If existing rows use hashes, do not insert plaintext passwords.
  6. Protect identifiers and scope.

    • Use only known database, table, and column names from schema inspection.
    • Prefer operating on the configured default database unless the user explicitly names another one.

Schema Change Workflow

For table or column changes, follow this order:

  1. Inspect the current table and relationships.
  2. Check whether a foreign key, unique index, or application expectation depends on the target column or table.
  3. Apply the smallest safe change.
  4. Verify the final schema.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
