fix-mise

fix-mise is a skill for Codex from jscraik/Agent-Skills. It costs 38 tokens per session (1,033 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A troubleshooting guide for mise, a tool that manages programming-language runtimes and development tools for a project.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to diagnose mise command failures, align required runtimes, choose between stable execution methods, and verify the repair.
Why use it?
It helps explain failures caused by untrusted configuration, missing or stale runtime versions, shell setup, or permission errors.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.01033
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00517
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00207
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00103

Security

Grade A, and why

fix-mise scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Fix Mise

Diagnose, fix, and validate mise runtime failures. Use when commands fail from mise config, missing runtimes, stale pins, trust prompts, or shell activation drift.

Philosophy

  • Keep the workflow evidence-first and bounded to the requested scope.
  • Prefer the smallest reversible step that proves or disproves the current assumption.
  • Preserve user work and repo-native contracts before introducing new machinery.

When To Use

  • Resolving untrusted mise config.
  • Installing or aligning required runtimes.
  • Choosing stable mise exec versus shell activation.
  • Cache, data, or state write failures that look like Operation not permitted.
  • Updating mise itself or distinguishing it from mise upgrade tool updates.

Avoid

  • Unrelated work that belongs to a more specific skill.
  • Broad rewrites before the first blocker or decision point is understood.
  • Claiming success without command, artifact, or decision evidence.

Inputs

  • failing command
  • error output
  • repo path
  • mise config
  • expected versions

Outputs

  • root cause
  • remediation
  • verification evidence
  • residual risk
  • Schema-bound outputs include schema_version.

Workflow

  1. Classify the requested mode and collect only the missing critical inputs.
  2. Inspect 2-3 focused surfaces before expanding scope.
  3. Take the smallest action that advances the confirmed goal.
  4. Stop at the first failed gate or blocker and report exact evidence.
  5. Rerun the relevant validation after fixes before claiming completion.

Current Mise Triage

  • Start with mise doctor, mise --version, which mise, and mise cache path.
  • Use mise install for missing tools and mise list to confirm selected versions.
  • Use mise trust <path> only for the specific config file or directory causing a trust blocker.
  • Use mise cache prune --dry-run before pruning stale cache, then mise cache prune only when cleanup is actually requested.
  • Update the mise binary according to its install method: Homebrew-managed installs use brew upgrade mise; non-package-manager installs can use mise self-update --yes.
  • Keep mise upgrade for configured tools, not the mise binary itself. Use mise upgrade --dry-run before changing tool versions unless the user explicitly asked for a broad upgrade.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
