do-storage-and-databases

do-storage-and-databases is a skill for Claude Code from jsgerman-oss/blackrim-nimbus-skills. It costs 75 tokens per session (2,691 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to choosing and managing DigitalOcean storage and databases. It explains object storage for files, attached block storage, managed databases, backups, and self-hosted alternatives.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose Spaces, Volumes, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis or Valkey, Kafka, OpenSearch, or a self-hosted Droplet setup.
Why use it?
It helps select storage based on how data is used and avoid mistakes with capacity, security, backups, replication, and operating costs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00075 $0.02691
Opus 5 $0.00037 $0.01345
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00538
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00269

Security

Grade A, and why

do-storage-and-databases scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

DigitalOcean Storage and Databases

When to use

  • Choosing between object storage, block volumes, and a managed database engine.
  • Sizing a Managed Database cluster and selecting a standby / high-availability plan.
  • Hardening data-at-rest encryption, backups, and connection security.
  • Auditing data egress, retention, snapshot lifecycle, and replication.
  • Evaluating the tradeoff between a Managed Database and self-hosting on a Droplet.

Decision tree

Need Service
Object storage for blobs, backups, static assets, data lake Spaces
Block storage attached to a Droplet or DOKS node Volumes
ACID relational, OLTP, joins, JSONB Managed PostgreSQL
MySQL-compatible relational Managed MySQL
Document store, flexible schema, horizontal scale Managed MongoDB
Sub-ms key-value cache, pub/sub, session store Managed Redis / Valkey
Event streaming, message queue Managed Kafka
Full-text search, log analysis Managed OpenSearch
Self-hosted, heavy customization, license control Droplet (Memory-Optimized or Storage-Optimized) + manual ops

Spaces defaults

  • Bucket policy: default to private. No public ACL unless the bucket exclusively serves public static assets. Use Spaces CDN + signed URLs for asset delivery rather than a public bucket.
  • Encryption: Spaces encrypts data at rest with AES-256. There is no customer-managed key option as of 2026 — if key-level audit / revocation is required, encrypt objects client-side before upload.
  • Versioning: enable on any bucket holding state, artifacts, or backups. Versioning is per-object and protects against accidental deletes.
  • Lifecycle rules: expire non-current object versions after your retention window (e.g. 30 d for build artifacts, 90 d for application backups). Unmanaged non-current versions accumulate and bill silently.
  • CORS: apply the narrowest CORS policy possible. Avoid AllowedOrigins: ["*"] on a bucket that holds anything other than fully public assets.
  • Access control: use Spaces access keys scoped per application, not personal PAT credentials. Rotate keys on personnel change and on a 90-day schedule.
  • CDN: enable Spaces CDN for any bucket serving end-user assets. CDN egress is cheaper than origin egress and reduces latency globally.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

do-storage-and-databases is a skill published in the GitHub repository jsgerman-oss/blackrim-nimbus-skills (8 stars, last pushed 26d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 75 tokens to every session and 2,691 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
