simplify

simplify is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from jstoup111/ai-conductor. It costs 51 tokens per session (2,161 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A review step for code changed in the current pipeline batch, checking for repeated business logic, unnecessary complexity, and over-engineering.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it at batch boundaries to compare changed files and related tests, then extract duplicated behavior while leaving merely similar code structure alone.
Why use it?
It catches problems accumulating across a batch without turning every code review into a full codebase audit.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00051 $0.02161
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.01081
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00432
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00216

Security

Grade A, and why

simplify scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Purpose

Runs at pipeline batch boundaries. Catches accumulated duplication, complexity, and over-engineering before they compound across batches. Enforces "dry business logic, not dry code" — extract shared behavior, not shared shape.

This is NOT a full codebase audit. It is scoped to the current batch's changes, except that changed tests must be compared with existing tests at the same production seam.

Practices

1. Scope Detection

Identify files changed in the current batch:

git diff <batch-start-commit>..HEAD --name-only

Keep non-test analysis limited to these files. For each changed or added test, additionally inspect existing tests at the same production seam; do not scan unrelated code or tests. The batch-start commit is available from .pipeline/audit-trail/batch-N/ or from the pipeline's progress log.

2. Duplication Check

Look for duplicated business logic across batch-changed files. Distinguish between:

Type Example Action
Duplicated behavior Same validation logic in two services Must extract
Duplicated shape Two serializers with similar structure Leave alone
Copy-paste with tweaks Same method with 1-2 param differences Extract with parameters — except a declared replication's exact mapped source/target pair alone is not an extract-with-parameters finding. Still flag undeclared duplication or similarity outside the declared target set; with no declaration, apply this row unchanged. A declared pair may retain an extraction finding when rationale beyond the declared replication merits it.

Flag when 3+ similar blocks exist across different files. Two similar blocks in the same file are a judgment call — flag only if the logic is non-trivial.

Before recommending extraction, inlining, or a competing abstraction, consult the applicable focused pattern basis (for example, the approved plan, architecture decision, or declared replication contract). Flag only a material, unapproved departure from that basis. Accept a variation the basis allows, a verified case where the proposed extraction does not fit the accepted design, or a departure that the operator or accepted artifact explicitly authorizes. This alignment check does not turn shared shape into shared behavior: extract only shared business behavior.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

simplify is a skill published in the GitHub repository jstoup111/ai-conductor (7 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 2,161 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
