webview-bridge

webview-bridge is a skill for Claude Code, Cursor from keska-labs/enterprise-skills. It costs 49 tokens per session (821 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for connecting a React webview, an embedded web page inside a VS Code extension, with the extension host, the part that runs the extension’s code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or changing webview messages, postMessage calls, host handlers, or Skill Manager sidebar and panel communication.
Why use it?
It keeps messages, handlers, and error reporting aligned when the webview and extension need to exchange information.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00049 $0.00821
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00411
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00164
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00082

Measured 11d ago against content hash 10b21b486f74, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-11, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

webview-bridge scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Webview ↔ extension host bridge

Architecture

Errors in handlers are caught, logged, and surfaced as { type: "error", message: string } to the webview.

Workflow: add a new webview → host message

  1. Extend the union in webview-ui/types/messages.ts:

    export type WebviewMessage =
      | { type: "ready" }
      // ...
      | { type: "yourAction"; foo: string };

  2. Handle it in both panels — add a case in handleMessage in SkillManagerSidebarProvider and SkillManagerPanel (keep them in sync). Pattern from the sidebar:

  private async handleMessage(message: WebviewMessage): Promise<void> {
    switch (message.type) {
      case "ready":
      case "getState":
        await this.postState();
        break;
      case "searchCatalog": {
        await handleGithubSearchCatalog(
          this.configService,
          this.repoService,
          this.catalogStore,
          message.query,
          (msg) => this.view?.webview.postMessage(msg)
        );
        await this.postState();
        break;
      }
    }
  }
  1. Send from React: useVsCodeApi().postMessage({ type: "yourAction", foo: "bar" }).

  2. Host → webview: If the UI needs new push updates, extend ExtensionMessage and post from the host with webview.postMessage(...). Existing examples: setState, syncComplete, browseUpdate, catalogSearchResults, recommendationsResult, error.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
