klayout

klayout is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from klinkdev2026/klayout-klink. It costs 51 tokens per session (5,704 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

An operator for KLayout, a desktop editor used to view and edit the geometric layouts of chips, microelectronic devices, and photonic circuits.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect, create, modify, select, validate, and debug layout shapes and cells in KLayout.
Why use it?
It provides structured queries and validation for layout state, reducing reliance on screenshots when checking selections, cells, layers, and geometry.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00051 $0.05704
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.02852
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.01141
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00570

Measured 4d ago against content hash 31779ead417b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

klayout scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 539 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

KLayout Layout Operations

You control KLayout through MCP tools provided by klink-mcp. Tool names preserve their dotted RPC names, such as layout.info, selection.get, and shape.insert_box.

klink.guide {} reports what is open, what intent state exists on disk, the literal call for each user intention, and a suggested next action. Every orchestrated tool result also carries next_action — follow it verbatim. The workflow lives in tool results, not in your memory.

Core Rule

Use structured layout state as the source of truth:

selection.get
interaction.selection.latest / recent, when available
shape.query
layout.info
cell.list / cell.tree
layer counts
geometry validators

Never call view.screenshot unless the user explicitly asks for a screenshot or visual artifact in the current conversation. Do not start screenshot capture automatically, do not use it as a fallback, and do not ask for it as a routine verification step.

Interaction Context Memory

klink-mcp may expose session-scoped interaction memory tools. This memory is external to the KLayout plugin and persists under:

.klink/sessions/<session-id>/interaction_context.jsonl

Use these tools for explicit sent/pinned user intent. For the MVP, stored memory is created when the user clicks the KLayout SEND toolbar action or when an agent calls selection.send_context, not from every ordinary GUI selection move:

User phrase First tool
sent GUI context: just sent, this area, here, that one interaction.selection.latest or interaction.selection.recent
multiple recent items: these three, the previous few interaction.selection.recent
exact current selection selection.get
explicit id such as sel_0006 interaction.selection.get
important reusable region interaction.selection.label
the ruler(s) I sent / claim what I sent interaction.selection.latest -> rulers[].id -> region.claim

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

klayout is a skill published in the GitHub repository klinkdev2026/klayout-klink (26 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 5,704 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
