symfony-testing

symfony-testing is a skill for Claude Code from krzysztofsurdy/code-virtuoso. It costs 72 tokens per session (2,757 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Symfony testing guide for PHPUnit, the PHP testing tool, covering the main test types and common framework-specific problems. Symfony is a PHP web framework, and PHPUnit runs automated checks on PHP code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when testing Symfony controllers, services, HTTP requests, Messenger messages or mail, and when configuring mocks, Foundry or database test setup.
Why use it?
It helps avoid mistakes caused by different Symfony and PHPUnit versions, private services, database state, restarted application kernels and changing assertion APIs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00072 $0.02757
Opus 5.5 $0.00029 $0.01103
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00551
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00276

Security

Grade A, and why

symfony-testing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 128 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Symfony testing

PHPUnit knowledge alone does not predict how Symfony tests fail. The container removes private services, the kernel reboots between requests, database state leaks between tests, and the assertion API changes with the Symfony minor and the PHPUnit major. This skill gives the version facts, the choice of test type, a Symfony-specific order for red-green, and a pitfall list that was checked by running a Symfony 8.1 project.

The generic procedure is in the tdd playbook and the strategy, doubles and flakiness rules are in the testing skill. This skill does not repeat them.

Check the installed versions first

Memory of "PHPUnit" or "Symfony" is often a major behind. Read the lock file before writing a test:

jq -r '(.packages + ."packages-dev")[] | select(.name|test("^(phpunit/phpunit|symfony/framework-bundle|zenstruck/(foundry|messenger-test)|dama/doctrine-test-bundle|symfony/panther|api-platform/(core|symfony))$")) | .name+" "+.version' composer.lock

Version matrix

PHPUnit (what changes in the tests you write):

Version Min PHP Changes that bite
10 8.1 Attributes introduced. Non-static data providers deprecated
11 8.2 Doc-comment metadata deprecated. Non-static, non-public and parameterized data providers removed
12 8.3 Doc-comment metadata removed: @test and @dataProvider stop working silently. expects() on stubs removed. From 12.5, a mock without expectations raises a notice
13 8.4 Sealed test doubles added. any() matcher hard-deprecated. PHP 8.3 dropped

Symfony (what changes in the test API):

Version Min PHP Test API facts
7.4 LTS 8.2 static::getContainer(), loginUser(), mailer and HttpClient assertions, CommandTester for commands
8.0 and 8.1 8.4 8.1 adds runCommand() with console assertions, assertSessionHasFlashMessage(), Closure factories for non-shared services, mock_response_factory per scoped client and true or false values

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

It adds 72 tokens to every session and 2,757 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-23.
