pbf: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/git-commit-message/SKILL.md

git-commit-message is a skill for Claude Code from maguro/pbf. It costs 22 tokens per session (1,029 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for creating and checking publication-ready scientific figures in Python or R. It covers figures for research papers, including multi-panel plots and SVG, PDF, and TIFF output.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps create, revise, audit, and polish figures for Nature-family and other high-impact journals.
Why use it?
It helps avoid figures that look polished but do not clearly support the paper's claim. It also provides checks for consistency and common review risks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00022 $0.01029
Opus 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00412
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00004 $0.00206
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00103

Security

Grade A, and why

git-commit-message scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill: Git Commit Message (Chris Beams style)

Purpose

After making code changes, produce a single Git commit message that summarizes the work, following the guidelines in: https://cbea.ms/git-commit/

Inputs

  • The staged diff or the full diff of the change.
  • The list of files changed.
  • Any user intent, task description, or ticket reference already present.

Output (exact)

Return only the commit message text in this structure:

  • Subject line (required)
  • Blank line
  • Body (optional, but required if the change is not self-explanatory)
  • Optional footer lines for issue references

Rules (must follow)

  1. Separate subject from body with a blank line.
  2. Subject line should be ≤ 50 characters (hard max 72).
  3. Capitalize the subject line.
  4. Do not end the subject with a period.
  5. Use the imperative mood (“Add…”, “Fix…”, “Remove…”).
  6. Wrap body text at 72 characters.
  7. Body should explain what and why, not how.
  8. Body defaults to one short paragraph, 2–4 sentences. A second paragraph is rare and must earn its place — it is not a default slot to fill.
  9. Write the body in ASD-STE100. Use the asd-ste100 skill to write and check it.

Procedure

  1. Identify the single primary purpose of the change.
  2. Draft 2–3 candidate subject lines and choose the best.
  3. Write the subject as an imperative outcome statement.
  4. Include a body if rationale or behavior change needs explanation.
  5. Add issue references only if explicitly present in context.

Writing the body (what belongs there)

  • Write for a reader running git blame years from now. Assume they have the diff and the code — but not the plan doc, the ticket, or your memory of today. A commit is immutable history: it's read as "what this was and where it was headed," so that orientation is worth giving.
  • State the change's effect and role at an altitude the diff doesn't already show. The diff is the how; don't re-narrate the mechanics.
  • Don't repeat what the code documents itself — a doc comment, README, or type. If it already lives in the tree, the body shouldn't echo it.
  • Record what the diff can't reveal: deliberate omissions (why there's no X), non-obvious trade-offs, the decision behind the shape.
  • Several changes landing in one commit don't each need their own sentence — name what ties them together once, rather than explaining each one in turn. One unifying sentence beats a roll call of the files touched.
  • Context about what the change enables, or where adjacent pieces live, is worth one sentence only if a reader would otherwise wonder about it — not because it's true. Phrase it as durable architecture ("recovery lives in the level runner that calls this"), never as ephemeral bookkeeping (phase / PR / ticket numbers, plan-relative "next step") a future reader can't resolve.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

git-commit-message is a skill published in the GitHub repository maguro/pbf (57 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 22 tokens to every session and 1,029 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-29.
