experiment-tracking-and-reproducibility

experiment-tracking-and-reproducibility is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from makifbaysal/tasktrooper. It costs 64 tokens per session (1,872 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Guidance for recording machine-learning experiments so another person can reproduce them. It tracks the code version, data version, settings, software environment, random seed, results, and saved model.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when training models, reporting metrics, changing data or random seeds, or working with MLflow or DVC. It helps make training entry points repeatable and keeps test runs separate from shared experiment records.
Why use it?
A model score is hard to trust if nobody can recreate the run that produced it. Recording the inputs and environment helps explain differences between runs and prevents accidental reliance on untracked randomness or data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.00064 $0.01872
Opus 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00749

Security

Grade A, and why

experiment-tracking-and-reproducibility scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Experiment Tracking and Reproducibility

Overview

A metric nobody can reproduce is an anecdote. Reproducing a run needs five things: the code (git SHA), the data (a version or hash), the parameters, the environment (lockfile) and the seed. Log all five with every run, and make the training entrypoint a deterministic function of them.

Core principle: if two runs with the same five inputs can produce different models, the difference must be explainable (GPU non-determinism, thread scheduling) and bounded — never "randomness" from an unseeded call.

1. What every run logs

Item How
Code git SHA and a dirty flag
Data DVC hash from dvc.lock, a snapshot date plus query, or a content hash of the training frame
Parameters the full resolved config, including defaults
Environment hash of the lockfile (uv.lock, poetry.lock), Python version, key library versions
Seed the one seed the run derived everything from
Metrics mean and spread across folds, the baseline's score, the test score once (rule test-set-discipline)
Artifact the fitted pipeline in a safe format (rule safe-model-serialization), with an input example
def data_fingerprint(df: pd.DataFrame) -> str:
    return hashlib.sha256(pd.util.hash_pandas_object(df, index=True).to_numpy().tobytes()).hexdigest()[:16]

def code_and_env() -> dict[str, str]:
    sha = subprocess.run(["git", "rev-parse", "HEAD"], capture_output=True, text=True, check=True).stdout.strip()
    dirty = bool(subprocess.run(["git", "status", "--porcelain"], capture_output=True, text=True, check=True).stdout)
    lock = hashlib.sha256(Path("uv.lock").read_bytes()).hexdigest()[:16]
    return {"git_sha": sha, "git_dirty": str(dirty), "lock_sha": lock, "python": platform.python_version()}

2. MLflow 3

with mlflow.start_run(run_name=f"churn-{cfg.seed}"):
    mlflow.log_params(cfg.model_dump())
    mlflow.set_tags({**code_and_env(), "data_fingerprint": data_fingerprint(train_df), "seed": str(cfg.seed)})
    mlflow.log_input(mlflow.data.from_pandas(train_df, name="train", targets="churned"), context="training")

    cv = cross_validate(pipe, X_train, y_train, cv=splitter, scoring="average_precision")
    mlflow.log_metrics({
        "cv_ap_mean": cv["test_score"].mean(),
        "cv_ap_std": cv["test_score"].std(),
        "baseline_ap": y_train.mean(),
    })

    pipe.fit(X_train, y_train)
    info = mlflow.sklearn.log_model(
        sk_model=pipe,
        name="model",
        input_example=X_train.head(5),
        skops_trusted_types=REVIEWED_SKLEARN_TYPES,
    )

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

experiment-tracking-and-reproducibility is a skill published in the GitHub repository makifbaysal/tasktrooper (113 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 64 tokens to every session and 1,872 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (runs shell commands). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-09.
