security-diff-review-method

security-diff-review-method is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from makifbaysal/tasktrooper. It costs 44 tokens per session (1,752 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A method for reviewing the security impact of a code change. It ranks changed files by risk, compares the change with the project's existing security patterns, and follows attacker-controlled data from its starting point to where it is used.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for security-focused code reviews, especially changes involving access checks, secrets, file paths, commands, databases, deployment files, or AI tool configurations.
Why use it?
It keeps a review focused on what the change newly makes possible, instead of attempting a full audit or skimming every file equally.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.01752
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00701
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00350
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00175

Security

Grade A, and why

security-diff-review-method scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Security Diff Review Method

Overview

You are reviewing a change, not auditing a repository. The question is: what can an attacker do after this diff that they could not do before? Every finding answers it with a source you can point at, a sink you can point at, and the diff line that connects them.

Core principle: risk first, then evidence. Spend your reading on the files that can hurt someone; trace one real data flow end to end rather than skimming ten.

1. Size Up the Change

The injected diff starts with git diff --stat — every file it lists is under review. Get the base once and reuse it:

base=$(git merge-base HEAD origin/HEAD 2>/dev/null || git merge-base HEAD origin/main)
git diff --stat "$base"
git diff "$base" -- path/to/file # each file the 24,000-byte cut left out

Tier every file before reading any of them closely:

Tier What lands here Depth
HIGH auth/session, access checks, crypto, secrets, deserialization, file paths, outbound URLs, shell/exec, SQL/templates, payments, dependency manifests and lockfiles, CI workflows, Dockerfiles, IaC, agent/MCP configs, anything an LLM with tools reads full source → sink trace
MEDIUM business logic, state changes, new public endpoints or exported functions, new config trace the inputs it accepts
LOW comments, copy, styling, tests, logging that carries no secret scan for secrets only

A refactor is HIGH until you have shown it is LOW: moved code is where a guard silently stays behind.

2. Phase 1 — Repository Context

Before judging new code, learn how this repository already defends itself. A finding is strongest when it says "every neighbour does X, this one does not".

  • Auth and access: the middleware group, the @PreAuthorize/@RolesAllowed convention, the "load for owner" repository method, the tenant filter.
  • Input handling: the validator, the query builder, the HTML escaper, the path helper, the URL fetcher with an allowlist.
  • Secrets: how config is loaded (env, secret manager), what the logger redacts.
  • Deployment shape: get_project_brief — a public multi-tenant service, an internal tool and a local desktop app have different attackers. It changes severity, never whether you trace.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

security-diff-review-method is a skill published in the GitHub repository makifbaysal/tasktrooper (113 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 44 tokens to every session and 1,752 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-09.
