refactor-simplifying-method-calls

refactor-simplifying-method-calls is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from mickeyyaya/refactoring-skills. It costs 49 tokens per session (1,984 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of code refactoring techniques for making method names, parameters, and responsibilities clearer. Refactoring means changing code structure without changing what it does.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to rename methods, add or remove parameters, group parameters into an object, preserve whole objects, or separate methods that read data from those that change it.
Why use it?
It reduces confusing method interfaces, excessive parameters, and methods that mix unrelated jobs. This makes methods easier to call correctly and maintain.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00049 $0.01984
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00992
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00397
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00198

Security

Grade A, and why

refactor-simplifying-method-calls scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Refactor: Simplifying Method Calls

Overview

These 14 techniques improve method interfaces -- making them easier to understand, call correctly, and maintain. Clean method signatures are your code's API contract; unclear signatures lead to misuse and tight coupling.

When to Use

  • Method name doesn't describe what it does
  • 4+ parameters
  • Boolean flag parameters switch behavior
  • Caller extracts data just to pass as parameters
  • Method does both query and command (side effects + return value)

Quick Reference

Technique Problem Solution
Rename Method Name doesn't communicate intent Descriptive name
Add Parameter Method needs additional data Add parameter (consider alternatives first)
Remove Parameter Parameter unused Delete it
Separate Query from Modifier Returns value AND changes state Split into query + command
Parameterize Method Multiple methods do same thing with different values One method with a parameter
Replace Parameter with Explicit Methods Parameter switches between different behaviors Separate method per value
Preserve Whole Object Extracting values from object to pass as params Pass the whole object
Replace Parameter with Method Call Callee can obtain the value itself Callee gets value directly
Introduce Parameter Object Same group of params appears together Bundle into an object
Remove Setting Method Field should not change after creation Remove setter, set in constructor
Hide Method Method not used outside its class Make private
Replace Constructor with Factory Method Constructor too limited Factory method
Replace Error Code with Exception Special return values indicate errors Throw exceptions
Replace Exception with Test Exception used for control flow Check condition before calling

Techniques in Detail

1. Rename Method

The simplest and most valuable refactoring.

// Before
function dt(d1: Date, d2: Date): number { /* ... */ }

// After
function daysBetween(start: Date, end: Date): number { /* ... */ }

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

refactor-simplifying-method-calls is a skill published in the GitHub repository mickeyyaya/refactoring-skills (6 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 49 tokens to every session and 1,984 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
