Microsoft Discovery is an extensible platform for scientific research and research-and-development workflows that combines agent orchestration, reasoning, graph-based knowledge, and high-performance computing. Researchers, partners, and product users use its Azure enterprise platform or local Windows app to explore and build research workflows. The catalogue entries provide skills and instructions for working with the Discovery community and platform.
Getting it into your agent
One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Grade A, and why
build-research-paper scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 423 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
build-research-paper — Research Paper Builder Skill
Turn a project's results + figures + notes into a publication-quality,
arxiv-ready PDF. This skill captures a pattern re-discovered across many
research projects, distilled into two build paths: a LaTeX-first path
(tectonic, the default) and a Markdown-first path (pandoc, the escape
hatch).
First: a paper is a paper
Read this before touching main.tex, and re-read it before declaring done.
Everything below is tooling. This is the point.
A paper is a document a human being reads, front to back, to learn something they did not know. That is the whole definition. Not a compliance artifact. Not a results dump. Not a receipt proving work occurred. Not a serialization of a task tree.
It follows that:
- The paper has a thesis — a story the data is telling. If you cannot say in one sentence what this paper found, it is not ready, regardless of how many sections exist. Write that sentence down before you write anything else.
- The reader is a domain expert, not a validator. They came for the finding. They will grant that you did the work carefully if you show them it holds; they will not read twenty pages of proof that it does before being told what "it" is.
- Figures carry the argument. A picture shows shape; a table files values. A data-analysis paper with no charts has not been written, only assembled.
- Rigor is the warrant, not the subject. Provenance, validation, failure logs and reproduction tests make the story trustable. They are not the story. When they migrate to the front, the paper has inverted itself.
- Nothing in the body may be unresolvable to an outsider. Internal task IDs, ticket numbers, commit SHAs and pipeline filenames mean nothing to a reader. If a sentence only parses inside your workspace, it is not prose.
- A paper is finished when someone has read it, not when the checks pass. Build the PDF, open it, and read it like a stranger would.

What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

build-research-paper is a skill published in the GitHub repository microsoft/discovery (286 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 184 tokens to every session and 4,820 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-04.
