writing-specs

writing-specs is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Netflix-Skunkworks/oci-agent. It costs 92 tokens per session (389 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A skill for writing YAML instructions that define a causal-data analysis. Causal analysis studies how a treatment or intervention relates to an outcome while accounting for other factors.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create analysis specifications for table or CSV data, including treatments, outcomes, covariates, and estimates such as ATE, ATT, or ATO.
Why use it?
It checks that the planned analysis has the required data columns and settings before work begins. This helps catch incomplete or invalid analysis plans early.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00092 $0.00389
Opus 5 $0.00046 $0.00195
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00078
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00039

Security

Grade A, and why

writing-specs scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Process

  • Confirm the plan or prompt names a tabular data source (table or CSV) with a treatment column and an outcome column. If either is missing, ask the user before drafting.
  • specs are YAML files. Write them under specs/{plan}/. Create the folder if it does not exist.
  • Point analysis_notebook at an .ipynb file in notebooks/.

Validation (before saving)

  • (skip for ACIC evals) Treatment and outcome columns exist in the data source
  • covariates is non-empty and excludes the treatment and outcome columns.
  • At least one estimand toggle (estimate_ate / estimate_att / estimate_ato) is true.
  • ato_threshold is in (0, 0.5).
  • analysis_notebook exists in notebooks/.

Fields — general analyses

  • data_path, treatment, outcome
  • covariates
  • estimate_ate, estimate_att, estimate_ato
  • ato_threshold
  • seed
  • analysis_notebook

Fields — ACIC evals only

  • acic_treatment, acic_response # replace data_path / treatment / outcome
  • covariates
  • seed
  • estimate_ate, estimate_att, estimate_ato
  • ato_threshold
  • analysis_notebook: econml.ipynb
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

writing-specs is a skill published in the GitHub repository Netflix-Skunkworks/oci-agent (139 stars, last pushed 26d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 92 tokens to every session and 389 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
