surface_volume

surface_volume is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from nezolder/civil3d-mcp-roslyn. It costs 15 tokens per session (365 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Civil 3D reader for cut-and-fill volumes from an existing TIN volume surface. Cut is material removed, fill is material added, and a TIN is a triangle-based terrain model.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to read cut, fill, and net volumes from a prepared volume surface.
Why use it?
It reports earthwork quantities without creating or changing a volume surface. This keeps the query read-only and avoids altering the drawing.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00015 $0.00365
Opus 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00146
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00003 $0.00073
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

surface_volume scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Code Template

TinVolumeSurface volumeSurface = null;

foreach (ObjectId id in CivilDoc.GetSurfaceIds())
{
    var candidate = Transaction.GetObject(id, OpenMode.ForRead) as TinVolumeSurface;
    if (candidate != null && candidate.Name.Equals("VOLUME_SURFACE_NAME", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase))
    {
        volumeSurface = candidate;
        break;
    }
}

if (volumeSurface == null) return new { error = "TIN volume surface not found" };

var volumeProps = volumeSurface.GetVolumeProperties();

return new {
    surfaceName = volumeSurface.Name,
    cutVolume = volumeProps.UnadjustedCutVolume,
    fillVolume = volumeProps.UnadjustedFillVolume,
    netVolume = volumeProps.UnadjustedNetVolume
};

Usage Notes

  • Run this template through civil3d_query; it only reads an existing TinVolumeSurface
  • Create the volume surface beforehand in Civil 3D or in a separately approved write operation
  • Do not create a temporary TinVolumeSurface inside civil3d_query: a live Civil 3D 2025 test rolled the object back but still changed DBMOD from 0 to 1
  • A live Civil 3D 2025 read test kept both the surface count and DBMOD unchanged
  • Net volume positive = more cut than fill
  • Units depend on drawing settings (typically m³ or ft³)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

surface_volume is a skill published in the GitHub repository nezolder/civil3d-mcp-roslyn (3 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 15 tokens to every session and 365 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-04.
