nvalchemi-distillation

nvalchemi-distillation is a skill for Claude Code from NVIDIA/nvalchemi-toolkit. It costs 109 tokens per session (6,431 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A machine-learning workflow for distilling a large frozen teacher model into a smaller student model in nvalchemi. Distillation trains the student to reproduce the teacher's outputs, using offline labels or an on-policy loop that gathers new training examples.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to label data with a teacher, train a student with teacher targets, run replay-buffer and mixed-data workflows, resume from checkpoints, and assess accuracy and stability.
Why use it?
It provides the training structure needed to transfer a teacher's behavior while covering checkpoints, restarts, evaluation, and stability checks. This avoids having to design those distillation loops and loss targets from scratch.

About the project

ALCHEMI Toolkit is a Python framework that uses GPUs to run atomic simulations and train machine-learned models for chemistry and materials science. Researchers and developers use it for molecular dynamics, geometry relaxation, and model training across one or multiple GPUs. Its catalogue add-ons guide coding agents in using the toolkit’s APIs and repository conventions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00109 $0.06431
Opus 5.5 $0.00044 $0.02572
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00022 $0.01286
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00643

Security

Grade A, and why

nvalchemi-distillation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 14d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

nvalchemi Distillation

Overview

Distillation trains a small student to reproduce a large frozen teacher. In nvalchemi it is a TrainingStrategy subclass over two named models, so everything from nvalchemi-training-api applies: optimizers, schedulers, validation, hooks, checkpoints, DDP. What distillation adds is a teacher whose outputs become loss targets.

Read nvalchemi-training-api and nvalchemi-loss-api first. docs/userguide/distillation.md is the concept guide and docs/modules/training/distillation.rst is the symbol-by-symbol reference.

import torch

from nvalchemi.dynamics.integrators.nvt_langevin import NVTLangevin
from nvalchemi.training import (
    ComposedLossFunction,
    EnergyMSELoss,
    ForceMSELoss,
    OptimizerConfig,
)
from nvalchemi.training.distillation import (
    DistillationStrategy,
    InProcessTeacherScorer,
    OnPolicyConfig,
    OnPolicySettings,
    AtomicEnergyMatchingLoss,
    ReplayBuffer,
    InitialStructures,
    TeacherLabelHook,
    build_mixed_loader,
    default_distillation_fn,
    label_dataset,
)

Two loops are available:

  • Offline — train over a fixed dataset, with the teacher's labels either precomputed into a store or produced on the fly. Start here; it distributes over ranks like ordinary training.
  • On-policy — generate frames by running dynamics with the student itself, label them with the teacher, and train on a mixture of those and reference data. Use it when the student is stable on the reference distribution but fails on the states it actually visits.

Minimal Pattern (offline)

strategy = DistillationStrategy(
    models={"student": student, "teacher": teacher},
    optimizer_configs={
        "student": [
            OptimizerConfig(
                optimizer_cls=torch.optim.AdamW,
                optimizer_kwargs={"lr": 1e-4, "weight_decay": 1e-6},
            )
        ]
    },
    loss_fn=EnergyMSELoss(target_key="teacher_energy")
    + 10.0 * ForceMSELoss(target_key="teacher_forces"),
    num_steps=10_000,
)
strategy.run(dataloader)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
