notification-hierarchy

notification-hierarchy is a skill for Claude Code from oborchers/fractional-cto. It costs 54 tokens per session (823 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of guidance for choosing how an interface should show messages such as confirmations, warnings, errors, and alerts. It distinguishes inline messages, toasts, banners, and modal dialogs by how much they interrupt the user.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to design or review toast notifications, banners, modal dialogs, snackbars, inline validation messages, and alert systems.
Why use it?
It helps match the interruption level to the importance of the message. This reduces confusing feedback and alert fatigue, where users see so many alerts that they stop noticing them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00054 $0.00823
Opus 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00329
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00165
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00082

Security

Grade A, and why

notification-hierarchy scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Match Message Urgency to Interruption Level

The notification hierarchy is one of the most commonly misapplied patterns in SaaS. IBM Carbon's framework provides the clearest decision guide. Each notification type has a specific purpose — misusing them causes alert fatigue and lowers productivity.

The Hierarchy

From lowest to highest disruption:

1. Inline Messages (Lowest Disruption)

Contextual feedback within a specific UI section. Persists until resolved.

Use for: Validation errors, field-level guidance, status indicators.

2. Toasts

Brief, non-blocking confirmations of completed actions.

Use for: "Item saved," "Email sent," "Record updated."

Rules:

  • Auto-dismiss after 3 seconds if they contain no actions
  • Persist if they include an undo button or other action
  • Never stack more than 4 toasts simultaneously

3. Banners

System-level or product-level notifications not tied to a specific task.

Use for: Maintenance windows, plan limits, degraded service, required actions.

Rules:

  • Persist until dismissed
  • Sit at the top of the screen
  • Not tied to a specific user action

4. Modals (Highest Disruption)

Block all other interaction. The nuclear option.

Use exclusively for:

  • Confirming destructive actions (delete, cancel subscription)
  • Acknowledging session expiry
  • Completing multi-step flows requiring focused attention

Never use modals for: Informational messages, success confirmations, or anything that could be a toast or banner.

Decision Guide

Scenario Notification Type
Field has a validation error Inline message
User saved a record successfully Toast (auto-dismiss 3s)
User deleted something (with undo) Toast (persist until dismissed)
System maintenance in 30 minutes Banner
User's plan is approaching its limit Banner
User is about to delete their account Modal
Session is about to expire Modal (with countdown)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
