saas-navigation

saas-navigation is a skill for Claude Code from oborchers/fractional-cto. It costs 58 tokens per session (733 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of guidance for structuring navigation in complex online applications. It covers sidebars, command palettes, breadcrumbs, workspace switching, and layouts that help users move through nested sections.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to design sidebar navigation, Cmd+K command palettes, breadcrumbs, workspace or organization switching, and top bars.
Why use it?
It helps users find features and understand where they are, especially when an application has many sections or organizations. It also supports keyboard-based access to frequent commands.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00058 $0.00733
Opus 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00293
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00147
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00073

Security

Grade A, and why

saas-navigation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Don't Make Users Think (About Navigation)

Jakob's Law dominates SaaS navigation: users spend most of their time in other apps and expect yours to work the same way. This is a measurable predictor of adoption speed.

Primary Navigation: Sidebar

The established pattern for complex SaaS is a left sidebar for primary navigation with a top bar for context and utilities.

When to use sidebar vs. header-only navigation:

Use Case Pattern
Small number of sections, no secondary hierarchy Header-only (top) navigation
Nested navigation (every real SaaS product) Left sidebar

IBM Carbon's guidance is definitive: the moment nested navigation is needed — and every real SaaS product needs it — use a sidebar.

Command Palette (Cmd+K)

The command palette is the power-user signature of modern SaaS. Linear, Superhuman, Slack, Figma, Notion, Vercel, and GitHub all implement it.

Essential design rules (from Superhuman's engineering team):

  • The same keyboard shortcut opens the palette from anywhere in the app
  • Pressing the shortcut again dismisses it and restores previous focus
  • Show keyboard shortcuts next to listed commands to teach power users
  • Make the palette context-aware — surface relevant actions based on current view
  • Do not conflate search and command palette — if search is a core feature, it exists at the same structural level, not buried inside the palette

Multi-Tenancy and Org Switching

Three models dominate:

Model Example Description
Single account, multiple orgs GitHub One user account added to multiple organizations
Separate accounts per org Google Distinct accounts for each organization
Hybrid (single account, multiple workspaces) Linear, Notion Single account, multiple workspaces

Build for the hybrid model — it covers the widest range of products.

Placement:

  • Sidebar header (Notion/Linear pattern)
  • Top navigation (GitHub/Vercel pattern)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

saas-navigation is a skill published in the GitHub repository oborchers/fractional-cto (32 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 58 tokens to every session and 733 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-13.
