arxiv-retriever

arxiv-retriever is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from PKUfudawei/arxiv-skills. It costs 20 tokens per session (1,474 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool for searching and downloading research papers from arXiv, an online repository of scientific manuscripts shared before or alongside formal peer review.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to retrieve arXiv papers when given topics, authors, titles, or other search details in natural language.
Why use it?
It turns a plain-language paper request into a search and download task.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00020 $0.01474
Opus 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00590
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00004 $0.00295
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00147

Security

Grade A, and why

arxiv-retriever scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/arxiv_retriever.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

arXiv Paper Retrieval Guide

Overview

Search arXiv and download papers by extracting parameters from user requests, synthesizing queries, and executing scripts/arxiv_retriever.py after user confirmation. For detailed arXiv API reference, see references/arxiv.md.

Quick Start

# Install dependencies
pip3 install arxiv arxiv2bib requests tqdm

# Basic keyword search
python scripts/arxiv_retriever.py --query "quantum machine learning" --max_results 10

# Search by paper ID
python scripts/arxiv_retriever.py --id_list "1706.03762,2305.12345"

# Author + title search
python scripts/arxiv_retriever.py --query "au:vaswani AND ti:transformer"

Workflow

User Prompt → Extract Parameters → Synthesize Query → User Confirmation → Execute Script → Download Papers

Output per paper

Each paper is saved to <output_dir>/<arxiv_id>/ containing:

  • <arxiv_id>.pdf — the paper
  • meta.json — title, authors, abstract, dates, categories, links (arXiv API available)
  • <arxiv_id>.bib — BibTeX entry (requires the arxiv2bib CLI)

Papers already present are skipped; pass --force to re-download. When --query is used and no --max_results is given, the top 10 results are fetched.

Parameter Extraction

Priority Order

  1. arXiv IDs (highest priority): "papers 1706.03762, 1810.04805" → --id_list "1706.03762,1810.04805"
  2. Keywords: "quantum machine learning" → --query "quantum machine learning"
  3. Author/title: "Vaswani's transformer" → --query "au:vaswani AND ti:transformer"
  4. Sorting: "latest" → --sort_by SubmittedDate --sort_order Descending
  5. Limit: "top 10" → --max_results 10

Date Range Conversion

User Input Query Format

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

arxiv-retriever is a skill published in the GitHub repository PKUfudawei/arxiv-skills (22 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 20 tokens to every session and 1,474 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
