worldsmith-methodology

worldsmith-methodology is a skill for Claude Code from queelius/claude-anvil. It costs 56 tokens per session (3,196 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for managing fiction worldbuilding as a set of connected documents that define facts, characters, systems, history, and temporary ideas.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to organize canonical and exploratory worldbuilding, assign document roles, maintain character and system records, and propagate revisions.
Why use it?
It reduces contradictions between notes and manuscripts by treating documentation as a source of truth and tracking changes between them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00056 $0.03196
Opus 5.5 $0.00022 $0.01278
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00639
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00320

Security

Grade A, and why

worldsmith-methodology scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Worldsmith Methodology

Rules and structure for documentation-first fiction worldbuilding. This skill provides what cannot be inferred from context alone: the editorial discipline, canonical hierarchy, propagation awareness, and character documentation standards that keep a worldbuilding project internally consistent as it grows.

1. Core Philosophy

Treat documentation as the source of truth for the fictional world. The manuscript is one expression of the world; the docs define it. Docs and manuscript should stay consistent with each other, but recognize that creative work is messy: bidirectional updates happen naturally. A scene might introduce a detail that needs to flow back into the docs, or a doc revision might require manuscript changes. Both directions are legitimate.

When docs and manuscript conflict, the docs are usually right: they represent deliberate editorial decisions. But exercise judgment. Sometimes the manuscript captures a better version of a detail that the docs haven't caught up with. The key discipline is noticing divergence and reconciling it, not enforcing rigid ordering.

All documents are living documents, including the project's CLAUDE.md. As the world evolves through writing, update the docs. As the docs evolve, keep CLAUDE.md current: it is the most frequently read document in any session and serves as the entry point to the entire editorial system. A stale CLAUDE.md undermines every subsequent action.

2. The Document Ecosystem

Worldbuilding projects organize their editorial knowledge across documents that serve specific roles. Think in terms of roles, not filenames: a project might call its timeline doc timeline.md, chronology.md, or history-dates.md. The role matters, not the name. Consult the project's CLAUDE.md for the mapping between roles and files.

Document Roles

  • Timeline Authority: The authoritative source for dates, event sequences, character ages at specific points, and day-numbering within chapters. When any other doc or the manuscript disagrees with the timeline on a date or sequence, the timeline wins.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
