defining-product-strategy

defining-product-strategy is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from RefoundAI/lenny-skills. It costs 33 tokens per session (999 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to turning a product vision into a focused strategy: diagnosing the main challenge, choosing where to compete, and deciding how to win.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to identify the key obstacle, define strategic priorities, explain the product’s purpose, and challenge a plan before acting on it.
Why use it?
It helps replace broad ambitions with clear choices, a simple explanation of the direction, and checks for blind spots.

About the project

Lenny Skills is a collection of product-management and engineering workflows for Claude Code and other AI agents, covering areas such as strategy, research, planning, shipping, growth, and hiring. Each skill gives an agent specialized guidance, frameworks, checklists, or templates for product work, and the catalogue contains many of these skills.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00033 $0.00999
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00500
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00200
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

defining-product-strategy scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Defining Product Strategy

Transform vision into a concrete plan of action by making hard choices that drive customer behavior.

Help the user with defining product strategy using insights from 27 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

How to Help

  1. Diagnose the crux - Help the user identify the primary obstacle or high-stakes challenge that is currently holding the product back.
  2. Guide the choice cascade - Walk the user through defining where they will compete and how they will uniquely win in that space.
  3. Structure the narrative - Assist in distilling complex directions into a simple 'why' and a set of memorable strategic pillars.
  4. Stress-test the plan - Use AI or external critiques to identify blind spots, common consensus thinking, or lack of defensibility.

Core Principles

Distill to a simple 'why'

Anneka Gupta: "When people say, 'I want someone that's strategic,' what they're really saying is, 'I want someone that can come up with and articulate a compelling and simple why behind the decisions and the direction of the company and product.' So that's number one. And the second piece is, 'I want someone that's going to champion and be a change agent to do things that may be hard but actually best for the long-term interest of the product or company, even though those things are not going to be easy to execute on.'"

True leadership requires the ability to take complex company directions and compress them into a single, compelling narrative that provides clear purpose for the team.

Strategy as an integrated set of choices

Annie Pearl: "Strategy is really just an integrated set of choices that outline how you're going to win in whatever marketplace you choose. And so, a good product strategy is going to answer questions like what's your winning aspiration? But maybe more importantly, where are you going to play?"

Avoid lists of goals by defining exactly where the company will compete and the specific mechanisms it will use to win in that marketplace.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
