spec-generator

spec-generator is a skill for Claude Code from rjmurillo/ai-agents. It costs 99 tokens per session (3,244 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A specification-writing tool that turns a feature description into requirements, design, and implementation tasks. It uses EARS, a structured way to write software requirements, and checks each file's metadata against a defined schema.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate requirements, formalize a feature, or create linked requirements, design, and task documents.
Why use it?
It gives an underspecified feature a clear path from expected behavior to technical design and work items. Schema checks help prevent invalid specification files from being produced.

These are SkillSpector’s own severities. On a checked sample its high-severity flags on skills were ~96% false positives — a documented command, a public API, a “never do X” rule — so we show them as a caution to read, not a verdict. Why →

Fix: Audit all comments and invisible characters. Remove any instructions that direct the agent to perform unauthorized actions. Use plain, reviewable content.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00099 $0.03244
Opus 5.5 $0.00040 $0.01298
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00649
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00324

Security

Grade A, and why

spec-generator scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 22d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/validate_spec_frontmatter.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Spec Generator Skill

Transform feature descriptions into 3-tier specifications: Requirements (WHAT/WHY) then Design (HOW) then Tasks (IMPLEMENTATION). Produce when context is sufficient. Push back when it is not.

This skill supersedes the former spec-generator agent. The change exists because the agent emitted invalid frontmatter enum values on every spec PR (PR #1995 drew 9 schema-violation threads; PR #1989 the same) because it wrote frontmatter from memory instead of reading the schema. This skill bundles the schema and a deterministic validator so the drift cannot ship.

Prose Self-Check

Before emitting any prose artifact (spec narrative, requirements, design, tasks, PR or issue body), run the prose-self-check skill (.claude/skills/prose-self-check/SKILL.md): four-layer AI-vernacular audit; weight structural and semantic findings above lexical; do not flag low-signal words on presence alone.

Triggers

Phrase Action
/spec Step 6 (formalize PRD) Generate REQ/DESIGN/TASK artifacts
generate spec, formalize requirements Natural-language activation
create requirements/design/tasks Alternative trigger

BLOCKING: Schema Compliance (read before writing any spec file)

The frontmatter schema is bundled at references/spec-schemas.md; .agents/governance/spec-schemas.md is the canonical source for frontmatter fields. The body-section checklist in the bundled reference documents this skill's ontology contract; validate_spec_frontmatter.py validates frontmatter only, while structural tests and the CI completeness prompt enforce ontology body sections. You MUST:

  1. Read references/spec-schemas.md before emitting any frontmatter.

  2. Use only these enum values. They are copied verbatim from the schema:

    Field Type Allowed values
    type all requirement, design, task
status requirement, design draft, review, approved, implemented, rejected
status task todo, in-progress, blocked, done, cancelled
    priority all P0, P1, P2
    category requirement functional, non-functional, constraint
    complexity task XS, S, M, L, XL

spec-generator is a skill published in the GitHub repository rjmurillo/ai-agents (48 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 99 tokens to every session and 3,244 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
