kotlin-exposed-patterns

kotlin-exposed-patterns is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ronmkr/PromptBook. It costs 36 tokens per session (5,043 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of kotlin-exposed-patterns, Apache-2.0.

A guide to using JetBrains Exposed, a Kotlin library for database access, with query building, transactions, connection pooling, migrations, and repository design.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when connecting a Kotlin application to a database, writing queries, defining repositories, configuring HikariCP, or managing Flyway migrations.
Why use it?
It helps keep database code organized and transaction-safe while separating it from business logic. It also addresses repeatable schema changes and reusable database connections.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00036 $0.05043
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.02521
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.01009
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00504

Security

Grade A, and why

kotlin-exposed-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Kotlin Exposed Patterns

Comprehensive patterns for database access with JetBrains Exposed ORM, including DSL queries, DAO, transactions, and production-ready configuration.

When to Use

  • Setting up database access with Exposed
  • Writing SQL queries using Exposed DSL or DAO
  • Configuring connection pooling with HikariCP
  • Creating database migrations with Flyway
  • Implementing the repository pattern with Exposed
  • Handling JSON columns and complex queries

How It Works

Exposed provides two query styles: DSL for direct SQL-like expressions and DAO for entity lifecycle management. HikariCP manages a pool of reusable database connections configured via HikariConfig. Flyway runs versioned SQL migration scripts at startup to keep the schema in sync. All database operations run inside newSuspendedTransaction blocks for coroutine safety and atomicity. The repository pattern wraps Exposed queries behind an interface so business logic stays decoupled from the data layer and tests can use an in-memory H2 database.

Examples

DSL Query

suspend fun findUserById(id: UUID): UserRow? =
    newSuspendedTransaction {
        UsersTable.selectAll()
            .where { UsersTable.id eq id }
            .map { it.toUser() }
            .singleOrNull()
    }

DAO Entity Usage

suspend fun createUser(request: CreateUserRequest): User =
    newSuspendedTransaction {
        UserEntity.new {
            name = request.name
            email = request.email
            role = request.role
        }.toModel()
    }

HikariCP Configuration

val hikariConfig = HikariConfig().apply {
    driverClassName = config.driver
    jdbcUrl = config.url
    username = config.username
    password = config.password
    maximumPoolSize = config.maxPoolSize
    isAutoCommit = false
    transactionIsolation = "TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED"
    validate()
}

Database Setup

HikariCP Connection Pooling

// DatabaseFactory.kt
object DatabaseFactory {
    fun create(config: DatabaseConfig): Database {
        val hikariConfig = HikariConfig().apply {
            driverClassName = config.driver
            jdbcUrl = config.url
            username = config.username
            password = config.password
            maximumPoolSize = config.maxPoolSize
            isAutoCommit = false
            transactionIsolation = "TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED"
            validate()
        }

        return Database.connect(HikariDataSource(hikariConfig))
    }
}

data class DatabaseConfig(
    val url: String,
    val driver: String = "org.postgresql.Driver",
    val username: String = "",
    val password: String = "",
    val maxPoolSize: Int = 10,
)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

kotlin-exposed-patterns is a skill published in the GitHub repository ronmkr/PromptBook (2 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 36 tokens to every session and 5,043 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. It is 92% identical to kotlin-exposed-patterns, differing in 2 lines, and is treated as a copy.
