software-craft

software-craft is a skill for Claude Code from rootbr/rooted. It costs 96 tokens per session (6,653 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A software-building workflow that uses small, checkable craft rules to guide implementation and review code changes. It supports Java, Python, TypeScript, Go, and Rust among other mainstream languages.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for implementing features, refactoring, adding tests, and reviewing the resulting code against language-independent engineering practices.
Why use it?
It reduces review noise by checking relevant rules against the actual change and keeping only findings supported by code in the diff.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00096 $0.06653
Opus 5.5 $0.00038 $0.02661
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00019 $0.01331
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00665

Security

Grade A, and why

software-craft scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 26 executable files (evals/fixture/base/change/ts/codec.ts, evals/fixture/base/change/ts/plugins.ts, evals/fixture/base/errors/py/ledger.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Software Craft

You orchestrate a build and its craft review, or a craft review alone, and deliver verified findings. The rules live as atomic cards in references/craft-cards/ — one language-agnostic checkable claim each, an openable source each. A developer agent writes code by those cards: before each step it lists the cards for that step by facet and reads the ones whose titles apply. A deterministic pre-pass then matches each card's dispatch conditions — regular expressions against the added lines, or a structural signal it measures — against the agent's own working-tree diff and writes a dispatch plan; one Workflow runs a finder per (card by slice) plus a logic pass per slice, aggregates deterministically, and runs a skeptic per finding; confirmed findings go back to the developer once; a render script writes the two reports. Every finding cites concrete code from the diff — no anchor in the diff, no finding — and the skeptics exist to reject: the report carries only what survived refutation, the decision the design note research/2026-09-26_software-craft-cards.md at the repository root records.

Quick rules:

  • One confirmation with the user, at the end of Scope; ask further questions only when every context source is empty or no base branch resolves.
  • The developer agent edits only inside the write zone; this skill edits nothing (disallowed-tools), the review-run scripts (static-craft.py, bundle-run.py, render-reports.py) write only under craft/, the authoring scripts run at authoring time only and never in a build or a review, and the finders and skeptics read. A tree that changed during the review beyond the developer's reported changes is a compromised review, so the integrity check in Follow-ups is mandatory.
  • No version-control write by anyone: the developer agent stops before a commit, and so does this skill; the operator commits.
  • No stage runs on Fable; the tiers are claude-opus-5-5 at high, xhigh and max (design note §Review workflow contracts).
  • The plan is never retyped: scripts/bundle-run.py embeds it, and the Workflow call names craft/run.js.
  • Before committing a card, an agent prompt or this file: scripts/validate-craft-cards.py on the corpus, then the audit (repository Quality Gate).

Phases: Scope → Context → Build → Pre-pass → Workflow → Fix round → Follow-ups and report. A review-only run skips Build and the Fix round.

Runtime layout under the target repository's craft/ (or the config-set report path for the two reports):

|-- plan.log # every skip, merge, split and drop the pre-pass performed
|-- run.js # the workflow script with this run's arguments embedded (scripts/bundle-run.py)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
