Research-Pi: Skill for Claude Code

.pi/skills/experiment-systems-optimization/SKILL.md

experiment-systems-optimization is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from RosMarinas/Research-Pi. It costs 59 tokens per session (1,082 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for making research experiments finish sooner by finding bottlenecks across the whole system, including code, data movement, batching, scheduling, and available hardware.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, batch sizes, caching, parallel work, and concurrency before running substantial experiments.
Why use it?
It prevents time being spent tuning the wrong resource—for example, assuming a GPU is the bottleneck just because one is available—and accounts for memory, storage, sharing, and cost limits.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00059 $0.01082
Opus 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00433
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00216
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00108

Security

Grade A, and why

experiment-systems-optimization scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Experiment Systems Optimization

Shorten the time to valid experimental results. Optimize the experiment's code and execution plan; mature public library internals are the lowest priority. A faster equivalent algorithm, fewer repeated computations or a better CPU implementation may matter more than GPU tuning.

Start with resources and the whole system

Establish the target execution environment and what this experiment may use: CPU cores, RAM, GPUs and per-device VRAM, relevant storage/data location, sharing, and time or cost limits. Reuse known allocations and permissions. Inspect accessible state; when missing information would change the plan, ask the user directly or through the Leader. Do not confuse total capacity or momentary idle capacity with the experiment's allocation. Continue independent code analysis while an answer is pending.

Actively use available capacity to accelerate the experiment. Existing small batches, few workers, tiny caches or streaming one record at a time may be historical defaults, not constraints. Consider RAM preloading/caching, device residency, larger chunks and batches, CPU parallelism and independent-run concurrency. Account for intermediates, worker copies, queued inputs and variable-size peaks; choose headroom from the workload rather than an arbitrary large reserve. Seek useful throughput, not minimum memory usage or filling every device.

Map the complete experiment: reads, CPU preprocessing/simulation, task construction, IPC, device transfers, compute, CPU postprocessing, aggregation and storage. Identify dependencies, repeated work, data sizes, queue waits and overlap. Locate the critical path or the stage limiting sustained throughput before choosing a device or profiler. A long library call may reflect excessive calls, poor inputs or waiting for earlier asynchronous work.

Investigate and change the limiting mechanism

Form a few competing explanations when the cause is unclear. Include alternatives that change the calculation or execution structure, not just current parameters. Prefer the cheapest discriminating observation: existing timings, call counts, stage/queue timing, a bounded CPU sample or a short device trace when needed. Full profiling is not mandatory.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

experiment-systems-optimization is a skill published in the GitHub repository RosMarinas/Research-Pi (7 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 59 tokens to every session and 1,082 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-28.
