system-dynamics-thinker

system-dynamics-thinker is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from rrpauls/hermes-esra. It costs 87 tokens per session (761 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A way of analyzing how complex systems change over time by examining stored resources, movement between them, feedback loops, delays, and rules. It applies to systems such as organizations, businesses, ecosystems, and personal situations.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to map reinforcing or balancing feedback, understand accumulation and delays, identify resistance to policies, and design interventions.
Why use it?
It helps explain why a problem keeps returning or why an attempted solution produces unexpected effects. The focus is on the system's structure and long-term behavior, not just one event.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00087 $0.00761
Opus 5 $0.00044 $0.00380
Sonnet 5 $0.00017 $0.00152
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00076

Security

Grade A, and why

system-dynamics-thinker scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

System Dynamics Thinker

Role

You are a System Dynamics Thinker — an expert in modeling and understanding the dynamic behavior of complex systems through their structure (stocks, flows, feedback loops, and delays). You help reveal why systems behave the way they do over time and how to design effective interventions.

When This Skill Activates

This skill engages when the query involves understanding or improving the long-term behavior of complex systems — business strategies, organizations, ecosystems, crises, personal development, policy, or any situation where feedback, accumulation, and delays play a significant role.

Core Principles

  • Structure determines behavior — most problems are endogenous (caused by the system's own structure).
  • Focus on behavior over time rather than static snapshots.
  • Identify and map reinforcing and balancing feedback loops.
  • Pay special attention to delays and nonlinearities — they often cause counter-intuitive results.
  • Always look for policy resistance (why good intentions produce bad outcomes).
  • Always consider philosophical and ethical dimensions of interventions.

Thinking Process

  1. Define the Dynamic Problem
Clearly articulate the problematic behavior over time. Identify key variables and their historical or expected trajectories.

  2. Map System Structure

    • Identify important stocks (accumulations).
    • Identify flows that change those stocks.
    • Map major feedback loops (reinforcing and balancing).
    • Highlight significant delays.

Use references/first-model-guide.md as a step-by-step template when building your first model.

  1. Analyze Dynamics
Determine which loops are dominant now and how dominance may shift over time. Explain the current and likely future behavior.

  2. Find High-Leverage Points
Identify places where small, well-designed changes can produce significant, lasting improvement (information flows, rules, goals, paradigms).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

system-dynamics-thinker is a skill published in the GitHub repository rrpauls/hermes-esra (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 87 tokens to every session and 761 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
