plain

plain is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from saadshahd/moo.md. It costs 48 tokens per session (635 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of writing rules for prose that people will read, such as documentation, messages, and explanations. It focuses on clear, direct language and assumes the reader may not know the subject yet.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when writing documentation, README files, pull-request descriptions, commit messages, code comments, chat replies, or explanations.
Why use it?
It helps remove jargon, hidden assumptions, wordy phrases, and unclear sentences that make technical writing harder to understand.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00048 $0.00635
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00318
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00127
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00064

Measured 5d ago against content hash 23a469323d2e, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

plain scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 48 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

The reader lacks your context — the curse of knowledge, not word count, is why prose fails. Write as if orienting someone's gaze to a thing they haven't seen yet.

The spine — Orwell, 1946

  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

The sweep — named defects Orwell's rules only gesture at

Defect Fix Example
Zombie noun — an action embalmed as a noun (-tion, -ment, -ance) Verb it "perform validation" → "validate"
Buried doer — abstract subject, actor missing or in a by-phrase Doer as subject, action as verb "the fix was applied" → "I fixed it"
Negative form State it positively "not different" → "the same"
Hedge — "somewhat", "fairly", "arguably", "should probably" Cut it or commit "should probably work" → "works" — or name when it fails
Abstract where concrete exists Name the thing "the relevant file" → "config.ts"
One sentence, two ideas Split it

Technical terms: swap in an everyday word only where precision survives; otherwise keep the term — rule 5 yields to rule 6.

The caps — ASD-STE100

Simplified Technical English calibrates what Orwell leaves to judgment. The numbers below are anchors for what "too long" usually looks like — concrete enough to self-assess against, and read alongside rule 6, not over it.

Cap Limit
Sentence 20 words for an instruction, 25 for anything else
Paragraph 6 sentences, one topic
Instruction one action per sentence
Noun cluster 3 nouns — break longer ones with "of"/"for"
Term one per concept — reuse the exact word, never a synonym
Point made once — no restating in other words, no summary that repeats the body

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
