external-electron-apps

external-electron-apps is a skill for Claude Code from saffron-health/libretto. It costs 100 tokens per session (1,013 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A browser-control workflow for desktop applications built with Electron, such as Slack, Discord, VS Code, Notion, Figma, or Spotify. It connects to a running app through its debugging interface.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to connect to an Electron app, inspect its windows, run interactions, capture evidence, and execute reusable workflows.
Why use it?
It lets an agent automate supported desktop apps without treating them like ordinary websites.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00100 $0.01013
Opus 5 $0.00050 $0.00507
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00203
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00101

Measured 9d ago against content hash 13198d8ca5a7, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-09, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

external-electron-apps scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 100 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

External Electron App Automation

Use this skill for external Electron desktop apps running on the user's machine. Do not default to this for this repository's own Electron app unless the user explicitly asks.

Core workflow

  1. Quit the app if it is already running.
  2. Relaunch the app with --remote-debugging-port=<port>.
  3. Connect with npx libretto connect http://127.0.0.1:<port> --session <session>.
  4. Verify targets with npx libretto pages --session <session>.
  5. Run interactions with npx libretto exec "<code>" --session <session>.
  6. Capture evidence with npx libretto snapshot --session <session>.
  7. When a reusable workflow file is ready, execute it with npx libretto run ./workflow.ts --cdp http://127.0.0.1:<port> (optional --page page-N).

Launch examples

macOS

open -a "Slack" --args --remote-debugging-port=9222
open -a "Visual Studio Code" --args --remote-debugging-port=9223
open -a "Discord" --args --remote-debugging-port=9224

Linux

slack --remote-debugging-port=9222
code --remote-debugging-port=9223
discord --remote-debugging-port=9224

Windows

"C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\slack\slack.exe" --remote-debugging-port=9222
"C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\Code.exe" --remote-debugging-port=9223

Session pattern

Use one session per app:

npx libretto connect http://127.0.0.1:9222 --session slack-desktop
npx libretto pages --session slack-desktop
npx libretto exec "return await page.title()" --session slack-desktop
npx libretto snapshot --session slack-desktop

Interaction examples

npx libretto exec "await page.locator('button:has-text(\"Search\")').click()" --session slack-desktop
npx libretto exec "await page.keyboard.type('incident-123')" --session slack-desktop
npx libretto exec "await page.keyboard.press('Enter')" --session slack-desktop

When selectors are unstable, inspect first:

npx libretto snapshot --session slack-desktop
npx libretto exec "return await page.content()" --session slack-desktop

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

external-electron-apps is a skill published in the GitHub repository saffron-health/libretto (889 stars, last pushed 19d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 100 tokens to every session and 1,013 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
