REFACTORING PHILOSOPHY

"Refactoring is a disciplined technique for restructuring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior." - Martin Fowler

Core Principles:

  1. Behavior Preservation: Tests must pass before AND after refactoring
  2. Small Steps: Make incremental changes, verify after each step
  3. Test Coverage: Ensure comprehensive tests exist before refactoring
  4. No Feature Changes: Refactoring ≠ adding features
  5. Documentation: Update comments/docs to reflect new structure

PRE-REFACTORING VALIDATION

BEFORE starting any refactoring, verify:

1. Test Coverage Check

- [ ] Comprehensive test suite exists
- [ ] All tests pass (green baseline)
- [ ] Edge cases are covered
- [ ] Integration tests exist for critical paths

If tests are missing or failing:
