flexible-visual-system

flexible-visual-system is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from scott-fryxell/brayness. It costs 157 tokens per session (1,738 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for deriving visual rules from an existing project and using them to create reusable SVG vector graphics.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect a project's design rules and generate composable graphics based on grids, repetition, transformations, color, and controlled variation.
Why use it?
It helps new graphics match the project's colors, typography, logo, icons, and overall visual language.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00157 $0.01738
Opus 5 $0.00078 $0.00869
Sonnet 5 $0.00031 $0.00348
Haiku 4.5 $0.00016 $0.00174

Security

Grade A, and why

flexible-visual-system scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Flexible Visual System

Generate raw SVG from rules, not by hand-drawing. One small rule set produces a coherent family of infinite variations.

Based on Martin Lorenz (new.twopoints.net/fvs), Flexible Visual Systems: design the system, not the output. Fixed rules + variable inputs = consistent identity that flexes.

Flow: intake -> sweep -> tune -> lock -> export. Intake derives rules from the project; the rest explores on top of them.

Core idea

A visual system is f(rules, seed) -> SVG.

  • The rules stay fixed (that is what makes the family coherent).
  • The seed / inputs vary (that is what makes each output distinct).
  • You explore by sweeping inputs in a playground, then lock the ones worth keeping as design-system assets.

Do not draw a logo. Build the machine that draws thousands of valid logos, then pick.

Intake: deriving rules from a project

The playground needs rules to sweep. Intake gets them from the project, not from thin air. Run it before any sweep.

Scan -> Map -> Bootstrap -> Lock.

  1. Scan - read the project's existing tokens, palette, type scale, logo, icons, base grid. A handful of anchors is enough; do not audit exhaustively.
  2. Map - translate findings onto the six primitives (palette -> Color, logo symmetry -> Transformation quantization, container grid -> Grid cols, stroke weight -> Module weight, etc.).
  3. Bootstrap - if scan finds nothing usable: a short guided interview (mood, 2 anchor colors, one motif, structure, do/don't, optional reference), then propose one minimal starter rule set with a why per rule. Not three to pick from - one, derived from what they said.
  4. Lock - write the chosen rules to the project's rules file so future runs read it first instead of re-deriving.

Read references/intake.md for the scan checklist, the finding-to-primitive map, the interview questions, and the bootstrap-to-lock handoff.

The rules file (project source of truth)

The locked rules live in visual-system.md at the project root. The skill reads it before every generate/sweep/export, and writes back when a rule changes or a keeper is locked.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

flexible-visual-system is a skill published in the GitHub repository scott-fryxell/brayness (120 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 157 tokens to every session and 1,738 once invoked, about $0.0008 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
