science-citation

science-citation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from shikaijieskj/science-skills. It costs 72 tokens per session (720 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research workflow for finding and checking supporting citations from Science-family journals. These include Science, Science Advances, and other journals published by AAAS.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to search for citation candidates, rank and verify them, map claims to references, confirm DOIs, and export citation files such as RIS, EndNote, or BibTeX.
Why use it?
It helps connect manuscript claims to verifiable references without inventing evidence.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00072 $0.00720
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00360
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00144
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00072

Security

Grade A, and why

science-citation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/science_citation.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Science Citation

Use this skill to turn manuscript claims into defensible citation candidates. It is a search and verification workflow, not a license to invent support.

Chinese request patterns such as "find citations", "add supporting references", and "Science-series references" should be treated as citation-support tasks.

Default scope

Default journals:

  • Science
  • Science Advances
  • Science Immunology
  • Science Robotics
  • Science Signaling
  • Science Translational Medicine

Keep the default retrieval scope focused on Science-family journals. If the user explicitly asks for a wider literature search, use general academic-search tools and label the broader scope separately from this Science-family citation workflow.

Open extra files

File Open when
references/journal-scope.md Need exact journal-family boundaries or scope labels
references/search-strategy.md Need to convert claims into search queries and support grades
references/ris-endnote.md Need RIS/EndNote export rules
scripts/science_citation.py Need a quick candidate search/export using OpenAlex and Crossref

Workflow

  1. Split the user's text into citable claims.
  2. For each claim, identify: topic, mechanism, system, evidence type, date window, and journal scope.
  3. Search authoritative sources in this order:
    • publisher page or DOI metadata for known references
    • Crossref / OpenAlex for broad DOI discovery
    • PubMed for biomedical claims
    • Semantic Scholar or Google Scholar only as secondary discovery
  4. Filter by journal scope, year, article type, title relevance, and DOI reliability.
  5. Assign support grade:
    • direct: the paper directly supports the claim
    • partial: same topic but narrower, broader, or different system
    • background: useful context but not enough for the claim
    • reject: not suitable
  6. Return a claim-reference map with DOI links and uncertainty notes.
  7. Export RIS/EndNote if requested.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

science-citation is a skill published in the GitHub repository shikaijieskj/science-skills (5 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 72 tokens to every session and 720 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
