themis-workflows

themis-workflows is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from spedas/spedas_agent_kit. It costs 48 tokens per session (3,081 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow guide for analysing data from THEMIS, a NASA mission that studies Earth's magnetosphere using several spacecraft. It connects mission-specific questions to existing analysis tools and data loaders.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to plan studies of magnetic storms, substorms, magnetotail boundaries, spacecraft position, particles, and waves, including checks before loading or exporting data.
Why use it?
It helps plan the right analysis steps without adding a separate tool for every type of THEMIS data source.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00048 $0.03081
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.01541
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00616
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00308

Security

Grade A, and why

themis-workflows scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 261 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

THEMIS workflows

Use this skill when the user asks for a THEMIS mission workflow, a THEMIS substorm/dipolarization route scout, a THEMIS magnetotail boundary/current-sheet context bundle, or a THEMIS FGM/state/particle/wave preflight. This is a router skill: it connects THEMIS mission vocabulary to existing Agent Kit analysis skills and external PySPEDAS loaders without creating one MCP tool per loader.

Compose it with:

  • overview-geomagnetic-indices for quick THEMIS FGM/ESA/SST/SSC overview routing and OMNI/Kyoto/NOAA storm-index context.
  • spedas-workflow and multi-spacecraft-gradients for magnetotail boundary, current-sheet, and multi-probe route-scouts.
  • boundary-minimum-variance, model-lmn-boundary, apply-rotation-matrix, and hodogram for LMN/MVA handoffs after a real boundary interval exists.
  • wave-polarization for THEMIS SCM scf / scp / scw valid-window checks.
  • neutral-sheet-distance and field-line-footpoint when state/orbit products are needed for tail geometry or ionospheric mapping.
  • pyspedas-load-planning and tplot-data-lifecycle for loader/cache/tplot hygiene.

MCP/default-surface boundary

This skill adds no MCP tool. Keep the default Agent Kit list_tools surface compact. The names below are external PySPEDAS runtime routes, not Agent Kit MCP names:

external_runtime_route:
  not_an_mcp_tool: true
  examples:
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.load
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.fgm
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.fit
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.state
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.ssc
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.ssc_pre

    - pyspedas.projects.themis.scm
    - pyspedas.projects.themis.efi

    - pyspedas.projects.themis.ask

Do not invent MCP tools such as themis_fgm, themis_state, load_themis, themis_esa, themis_sst, or themis_scm. MCP-only clients should use the resource/plan/fetch verbs:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

themis-workflows is a skill published in the GitHub repository spedas/spedas_agent_kit (3 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 3,081 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
