karea

karea is a skill for Claude Code from starecz/karea-mcp. It costs 55 tokens per session (672 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A skill for managing tasks in Karea, a keyboard-focused task manager for solo developers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to start, update, review, and close tasks; record questions and notes; add requirements; recap work; and link tasks to Jira issues or files.
Why use it?
It keeps coding work, open questions, notes, links, and completion requirements in one task record during a work session.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.00672
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00336
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00067

Security

Grade B, and why

karea scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Reads MCP configurationmediumAgent snooping

mcp.json carries server URLs and auth tokens; reading it lets a mod discover and abuse other integrations.

The Karea MCP server is configured via `.mcp.json` in this plugin. Users need an API key from <https://karea.app/dashboard/settings/api-keys> exposed as `KAREA_API_KEY`. The full tool catalogue (44 tools) is in the plugi

Karea Task Manager

Karea is a keyboard-first task manager for solo developers. This skill teaches Claude Code how to use the Karea MCP server to manage tasks naturally during a coding session.

When to use

  • User says "log this as a task", "create a task", "add to my todo", "I'm starting on X", "I'm done with Y", "what's next", "show me my tasks", "give me a recap of last week"
  • User mentions a Karea task by short ID (e.g. KA37, KPL12) or by name
  • User asks Claude to open / answer questions on a task while working
  • User wants to link the current work to a Jira issue or a resource file

Core flow

  1. Start work -> karea_doing("task title or ID") to set status to in_progress
  2. Add open questions as they arise -> karea_create_question(task, "what should X behave like when Y?")
  3. Add closing requisites that must be true before close -> karea_add_requisite(task, "tests pass")
  4. Append investigation notes to long-form markdown -> karea_set_markdown(task, "..." ) or karea_add_note(task, "...")
  5. Finish -> karea_toggle_requisite to tick each closing requisite, then karea_done(task) or karea_close_task(task)

Common patterns

  • Quick capture during conversation: karea_quick_task("fix the bug we just found")
  • Detailed task with structure: karea_create_task with title, description, priority (1=critical), category, tags, closingRequisites array, markdown body
  • Subtasks for breakdown: karea_create_subtask(parent, "step 1"), repeat
  • Productivity recap across a date range: karea_recap(from, to)
  • Link to Jira: karea_link_jira(task, "PROJ-123")
  • Attach a file or URL: karea_create_resource then karea_link_resource_to_task

Conventions

  • Always prefer the user's existing task IDs (e.g. KA37) over creating duplicates
  • When closing a task, write a 2-3 sentence note about what changed and any technically notable detail
  • Default status on finish is review, not done (unless user says done explicitly)
  • Never run destructive actions (karea_delete_*) without explicit user confirmation

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

karea is a skill published in the GitHub repository starecz/karea-mcp (1 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 55 tokens to every session and 672 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (reads mcp configuration). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
