statespace

statespace is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from statespace-tech/statespace. It costs 55 tokens per session (4,569 once invoked), scanned D, original, Apache-2.0.

A command-line system for running A/B tests, which compare different versions of an app with separate groups of users, on live production traffic.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create app versions from branches, split traffic between variants and a control, roll out changes gradually, and query experiment results with SQL.
Why use it?
It lets teams compare a code change with the current version using assigned traffic and recorded output instead of relying only on local tests.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.04569
Opus 5.5 $0.00022 $0.01828
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00914
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00457

Security

Grade D, and why

statespace scanned grade D with 3 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 461 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Statespace

Statespace runs commits of an app on small shares of live traffic and counts what happens to their subjects.

  • An app is one running copy of a service, such as shop-prod. A proxy is in front of it.
  • An experiment compares commits in one app. Its table in statespace.toml defines it, such as [experiment.checkout].
  • An arm is one commit in one experiment, with an exact share of the app's subjects, such as a1b2c3d=0.05. The commit is the arm's ID.
  • No arm is special. To compare a change with what runs now, add the live commit as an arm.
  • Live gets every request that no experiment takes. Statespace never counts live or overrides.
  • Each start begins a new version. Evidence is per version.
  • Settings and experiment definitions are in statespace.toml. They change only by commits. The file in the build that live runs applies.
  • The evidence is on each arm's commit, as the commit status statespace/<app>/<experiment>, and in ssp experiment show.

Statespace never starts an experiment by itself. A person or an agent with permission on the GitHub repository starts it. Add --json to each ssp command to get one JSON document. With --json, an error is {"error": "..."} on standard error, with exit status 1. No command asks a question, except ssp login.

Credentials

The CLI uses the first credential that it finds:

  1. STATESPACE_TOKEN.
  2. The session of ssp login.
  3. A GitHub user token in GH_TOKEN or GITHUB_TOKEN (gho_, ghp_, ghu_, github_pat_).
  4. In GitHub Actions, the job's OIDC token. The job needs permissions: id-token: write.

Check the credential first:

ssp whoami --json

If it fails and you have no GitHub token, ask the user to run ssp login. This command opens a browser, so the user must run it.

A new workspace starts as pending. Until Statespace staff activate it, every command fails with <workspace> is pending: Statespace is reviewing your access. Tell the user, and stop. Retrying does not help.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

statespace is a skill published in the GitHub repository statespace-tech/statespace (1 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 55 tokens to every session and 4,569 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it D with 3 findings (asks for root, downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-16.
