db-resiliency-setup

db-resiliency-setup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from StefanTheCode/dotnet-ai-toolkit. It costs 98 tokens per session (641 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup guide for making EF Core, the .NET database library, handle temporary database failures such as timeouts, failovers, and throttling.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps configure connection retries, command timeouts, and transactions that work correctly with retries.
Why use it?
It explains how to retry safely and avoid transaction mistakes when a database briefly becomes unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00098 $0.00641
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.00320
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00128
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

db-resiliency-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Database Resiliency Setup

Make EF Core survive transient database failures (timeouts, failovers, throttling) with the built-in execution strategy — and do it correctly, including the manual-transaction caveat that trips people up.

Input — point it at your project

Works on a target: a file, project, or GitHub URL. Find DB setup: grep -rn "UseNpgsql\|UseSqlServer\|EnableRetryOnFailure\|BeginTransaction" --include=*.cs <target>.

Enable retry

builder.Services.AddDbContext<AppDbContext>(o =>
    o.UseNpgsql(conn, npg => npg.EnableRetryOnFailure(
        maxRetryCount: 5,
        maxRetryDelay: TimeSpan.FromSeconds(10),
        errorCodesToAdd: null)));      // SQL Server: o.UseSqlServer(conn, s => s.EnableRetryOnFailure());

Also set a sensible command timeout: npg.CommandTimeout(30).

The transaction caveat (important)

With a retrying execution strategy, you cannot wrap multiple SaveChanges/commands in a manual BeginTransaction directly — the strategy needs to own the retry boundary. Use the execution strategy explicitly:

var strategy = db.Database.CreateExecutionStrategy();
await strategy.ExecuteAsync(async () =>
{
    await using var tx = await db.Database.BeginTransactionAsync(ct);
    // ... multiple operations ...
    await db.SaveChangesAsync(ct);
    await tx.CommitAsync(ct);
});

Idempotency

Retries can re-run a unit of work. Ensure operations are idempotent (or guarded by a unique key / outbox) so a retry after a partial success doesn't double-apply.

Principles

  • Retry transient faults, not logic errors — the execution strategy targets known transient codes; don't retry a constraint violation.
  • Own the retry boundary: manual transactions must go inside CreateExecutionStrategy().ExecuteAsync(...).
  • Cap retries and back off — infinite retries turn a blip into an outage.
  • Combine with app-level resiliency (Polly) for non-DB dependencies, not for the DB call EF already guards.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

db-resiliency-setup is a skill published in the GitHub repository StefanTheCode/dotnet-ai-toolkit (19 stars, last pushed 25d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 98 tokens to every session and 641 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
