ef-index-advisor

ef-index-advisor is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from StefanTheCode/dotnet-ai-toolkit. It costs 102 tokens per session (646 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A database-index recommendation tool for Entity Framework Core code. Indexes are data structures that help a database find and sort rows faster.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect filters, joins, sorting, uniqueness checks, and selected fields, then generate the matching HasIndex configuration.
Why use it?
It connects the indexes to the queries your application actually makes, helping avoid slow queries and unnecessary indexes that increase write and storage costs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00102 $0.00646
Opus 5 $0.00051 $0.00323
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00129
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00065

Security

Grade A, and why

ef-index-advisor scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

EF Core Index Advisor

Find the indexes a model is missing by looking at how its entities are queried, and emit the HasIndex configuration (plus column order and includes) — without over-indexing.

Input — point it at your code

Works on a target: a folder, project/solution, or GitHub URL. Find query patterns and current indexes with:

grep -rn "\.Where(\|\.OrderBy\|\.Join(\|\.FirstOrDefault\|\.Single" --include=*.cs <target>
grep -rn "HasIndex\|IsUnique" --include=*.cs <target>

How it reasons

For each frequently-queried entity, map predicates → index:

  • Equality filters → index the filtered column(s). Multiple AND equality filters → composite index (most selective / most common first).
  • Range + equality → equality columns first, range column last.
  • OrderBy after a filter → include the sort column in the composite to avoid a sort.
  • Frequently selected extra columns → consider a covering index (.IncludeProperties(...)).
  • Natural keys / dedupeunique index.
  • Foreign keys used in joins/filters → index them (EF indexes FKs by default, but verify composite needs).

Output

modelBuilder.Entity<Order>()
    .HasIndex(o => new { o.CustomerId, o.Status, o.CreatedAt })   // filter CustomerId+Status, sort CreatedAt
    .HasDatabaseName("IX_Orders_Customer_Status_Created");

modelBuilder.Entity<Order>()
    .HasIndex(o => o.ExternalRef).IsUnique();

Principles

  • Index for the queries you run, not every column. Every index speeds reads but slows writes and costs storage.
  • Column order in composites matters — equality before range, common filters first.
  • Confirm with the query plan. Recommend EXPLAIN ANALYZE (Postgres) / actual execution plan (SQL Server) and ToQueryString() to verify the index is used.
  • Watch for redundant indexes (a composite often makes a single-column one unnecessary).

How to use it & best prompts

"What indexes does this project need?", "why is this query slow — missing index?", "design a composite index for filtering by customer+status and sorting by date". Pairs with ef-core-query-optimizer.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
