sql-linq-converter

sql-linq-converter is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from StefanTheCode/dotnet-ai-toolkit. It costs 107 tokens per session (653 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for translating between SQL, a language for querying databases, and EF Core LINQ, the C# query syntax used with Microsoft's database framework.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps write LINQ from SQL, inspect the SQL produced by LINQ, migrate database code to EF Core, and identify issues such as extra database queries or client-side processing.
Why use it?
It helps keep queries equivalent in both forms and points out SQL features that EF Core cannot translate directly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00107 $0.00653
Opus 5 $0.00053 $0.00327
Sonnet 5 $0.00021 $0.00131
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00065

Security

Grade A, and why

sql-linq-converter scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

SQL ⇄ LINQ Converter

Translate between raw SQL and EF Core LINQ in either direction, keeping the result set identical and flagging constructs that don't translate cleanly.

Input — point it at your code or paste the query

Works on a target (a file, folder, project, GitHub URL) or a pasted query. For SQL→LINQ, you may need the entity definitions — find them with grep -rn "DbSet<\|class .* :" --include=*.cs <target>.

SQL → LINQ

SELECT c.Name, COUNT(o.Id) AS Orders
FROM Customers c LEFT JOIN Orders o ON o.CustomerId = c.Id
WHERE c.IsActive = 1
GROUP BY c.Name HAVING COUNT(o.Id) > 5
ORDER BY Orders DESC;
var rows = await db.Customers
    .Where(c => c.IsActive)
    .Select(c => new { c.Name, Orders = c.Orders.Count() })
    .Where(x => x.Orders > 5)
    .OrderByDescending(x => x.Orders)
    .ToListAsync(ct);

LINQ → SQL

Show the translation EF will produce (or use query.ToQueryString()), so the user can read the actual SQL and spot N+1 or client evaluation.

Won't-translate flags

  • Window functions / CTEs / PIVOT — often need FromSql or a mapped view; say so.
  • Vendor-specific functions — map to EF.Functions.* where available, else raw SQL.
  • Set operations and recursive queries — note EF support limits.
  • Stored procedures — wrap with FromSql/SqlQuery, or port the logic to LINQ if simple.

Principles

  • Preserve semantics first (joins, null handling, grouping), performance second.
  • Parameterize — never concatenate user input; use interpolated FromSql($"...{p}") (safe) when raw SQL is needed.
  • When a query genuinely belongs in SQL (heavy analytics), say so instead of forcing awkward LINQ.
  • Always offer to show the generated SQL so the translation is verifiable.

How to use it & best prompts

"Convert this SQL to EF Core LINQ", "what SQL does this LINQ generate", "port this stored procedure to LINQ", "rewrite this ADO.NET query with EF". Pairs with ef-core-query-optimizer.

Files

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

sql-linq-converter is a skill published in the GitHub repository StefanTheCode/dotnet-ai-toolkit (19 stars, last pushed 25d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 107 tokens to every session and 653 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
